TSA Issues Secret Warning on 'Catastrophic' Threat to Aviation
First Look / The Intercept ^ | 02/25/2015 1:34 PM | Jana Winter

The Transportation Security Administration said it is unlikely to detect and unable to extinguish what an FBI report called “the greatest potential incendiary threat to aviation,” according to a classified document obtained by The Intercept. Yet despite that warning, sources said TSA is not adequately preparing to respond to the threat.

Thermite — a mixture of rust and aluminum powder — could be used against a commercial aircraft, TSA warned in a Dec. 2014 document, marked secret. “The ignition of a thermite-based incendiary device on an aircraft at altitude could result in catastrophic damage and the death of every person onboard,” the advisory said.

TSA said it is unlikely to spot an easy-to-assemble thermite-based incendiary device during security screening procedures, and the use of currently available extinguishers carried on aircrafts would create a violent reaction. The TSA warning is based on FBI testing done in 2011, and a subsequent report.

A thermite device, though difficult to ignite, would “produce toxic gasses, which can act as nerve poison, as well as a thick black smoke that will significantly inhibit any potential for in-flight safety officers to address the burn.”

Surprised that hasn’t happened yet.

Actually, I’m quite impressed with the level of stupidity such terrorists have shown in the last couple decades. If survival is optional, the options abound.

TSA should pay ISIS for this political talking point in the DHS (immigration funding) debate.

You cannot extinguish a thermite fire. It will burn through the floor, cargo containers, and the hull.

Correct. The procedure to fight a thermite fire would be to let it burn.

Once it goes through the floor it will extinguish itself, as the aluminum and hematite will separate.

It will not explode.

There are a lot more dangerous things in the world than thermite though... example, 140 pounds of Uranium ultimately killed about 150,000 people at Hiroshima.

By comparison, 140 pounds of the plant toxin abrin would constitute enough toxin to constitute 280 million fatal airborne doses.

The TSA publishing stuff so that groups like al-Qaida and ISIS can read it is foolish, even if some stuff seems like it should be obvious, because as stupid as TSA seems, those camel-riding morons seem even dumber and not particularly original.

(When I was in high school in the 1980’s when there were air hijackings and the Beirut Marine barracks bombing, I wondered why the terrorists never came up with the idea of hijacking a plane and using it as a suicide weapon. Either I’m really smart or the terrorists are really stupid)

Talk about a stretch. This one really takes the cake. They are running out of excuses for keeping the TSA in business sticking their hands down everyone’s pants.

Gotta try to keep the sheeple scared.

If you like thermite, you will love nano-thermite. "Nanoscale composites are easier to ignite than traditional thermites. A nichrome bridgewire can be used in some cases."

It’s just a one page TSA summary. The websites are exploiting it to get hits.
