What the rate of family breakdown in India, or South America? Doesn’t seem to follow that poverty or even income inequality have anything to do with this.

Seems to me that a married couple with 2 children pooling their resources, possibly with help of extended family, should be able to deal with poverty better than a couple maintaining separate households. (sort of like what Asians often do) I guess there may be something to those "family values" after all. Incentivizing lack of restraint and saving for the future, panders to the lowest common denominator in terms of character, and encourages a race to the bottom... witness the decline of the white family, following the decline of the black family. But that's just mathematics, something liberals don't understand, otherwise they'd exercise fiscal restraint.
