containment, not elimination. That did not work; instead it drained the USA’s resources and got in the way of decisive victories in Cuba and Vietnam. Reagan did not seek to contain communism, by contrast.
Omitting the bit about “ask(ing) what you can do for your country” ignores the collectivist overtones.
