When conservatives gather Thursday for their annual confab there will be homages to Ronald Reagan everywhere. He’ll be mentioned in speeches, he’ll show up as a life-size cardboard cutout, and on posters and buttons. The event’s big dinner is in his name.
At the Conservative Political Action Conference, Reagan is king. And the many Republicans vying to be president will work feverishly to align with him. But do they?

All true. It doesn't stop people from asking the question though, even when it comes to long-dead figures like Jefferson, Lincoln, FDR, and JFK. It's more a way of making a political argument than a serious attempt to answer unanswerable questions.

Can you imagine if Walker or Cruz came out for instant amnesty to all illegals in the country like Reagan did? Can you imagine the flames?

You pretty much summed up what I think of president Reagan.
I admire him for winning the cold war, and on his watch inflation was tamed and 22 million jobs were created. I made lots of money in the stock market during 8 years of Reagan. Reagan did a great job of improving America’s stature in the world. Overall a very good president.
But he was not all pure. Many here want to put their blinders on for his Amnesty to 3 million illegals. That encouraged more illegals to flood in. Even more than that, I was upset about his reaching deals with the democrat congress on spending. Spending tripled, but tax revenues doubled during his 8 years.

Nothing has changed about Reagan, but conservative tolerance for anything Democrat or even RINO has been wholly eliminated from discourse.
Every day of the week you can read anti-RINO, anti-GOPe threads here on FR, despite Reagan’s 11th Commandment.
Reagan had far more tolerance for those who were not purists than exist in the party today. I believe in today’s climnate Reagan would get a lot of grief for that.

Welcome to freerepublic, I’m guessing that since you are spewing the liberal anti-conservative lines and attacking freerepubic as being anti-Reagan, that you are a retread.
Reagan isn’t a theory to us, we know Reagan, we supported Reagan, voted for Reagan, many of us served under Reagan, and we like Reagan.
Here you new to the forum and already lecturing us on being too conservative and too purist, today Reagan would be allied with Palin and Cruz and the other conservatives, just as he was in the old days.
Reagan was from the right wing of the GOP and was hated by the rinos.

Also, it is absolutely true that the 11th Commandment in and of itself is proof of my point. President Reagan (the first and second votes I cast for president) was far more forgiving of those who did not adhere to every point of conservatism than many in the conservative movement today.

Ronald Reagan is the ONLY Republican in modern times to challenge a SITTING REPUBLICAN PRESIDENT for the GOP nomination and he did it by smearing Ford's liberal policies.
Reagan lived by the 11th Amendment and conservatism flourished.

Yes, and that included big government Republicans like Dole, who told Reagan that he couldn’t get his tax cuts through the Senate. Dole found out otherwise.
