McConnell Throws in Towel on DHS Fight, but Reid Waiting for Boehner to Cave

In an extraordinary sequence of events, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell offered Democrats exactly what they have been asking for Tuesday — “clean” full-year funding for the Department of Homeland Security. And Minority Leader Harry Reid said no — or at least, not yet.

McConnell’s offer of passing a clean full-year Homeland Security bill through the Senate shorn of immigration provisions — which he said could happen quickly with Democratic cooperation — was put on hold by Reid, who told reporters he was waiting to hear Speaker John A. Boehner agree to pass it through the House first.

“We have to make sure that we get a bill to the president,” Reid said. “Unless Boehner’s in on the deal, it won’t happen.”

That could lead to the extraordinary circumstance of Democrats blocking a bill they have insisted on for weeks.

Michael Steel, a spokesman for Boehner, didn’t say whether the Ohio Republican would go along with a clean bill. “The speaker has been clear: the House has acted, and now Senate Democrats need to stop hiding. Will they continue to block funding for the Department of Homeland Security or not?”

McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, has all along said he wanted to avoid shutdowns on his watch.

“I do think we have a responsibility to act,” he told reporters.

His latest move is controversial among the GOP ranks, with a number of Republican senators backing his gambit, but others, such as Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, continuing to oppose any bill that could allow any funding for President Barack Obama’s executive actions on immigration.

But Reid has focused his Democrats on a singular goal — a presidential signature — with debates on immigration and other issues on hold until then.

Democrats don't recognize the power of the opposition. They sieze it.

And the opposition leadership lets them.

McConnell = Leadership!

What Leadership? This guy is a follower of the Democrats and a bully to his ‘own’ side.

If Mcconnell had any balls (he doesn’t), should immediately bring bill to floor, go with nuclear option & tell RATs to embrace the suck!

If you vote for a Republican thinking it makes a difference, you couldn’t be more wrong.

The factions that own the GOPee want cheap labor, and the GOPee is going to give it to them one way or another.

Too bad Kentucky didn’t elect Lundergan-Grimes in Nov. The GOP could’ve absorbed that loss and kept McConnell out.

Exactly!

The only difference between a Libtard/Democrat and an Obama Republican is that the occasional Libtard has testicles.

How anyone could at this late date have any doubt as to the worthlessness of the GOP is beyond credibility. They have not and will not fight for ANYTHING. They will only make feints to gull the public.

We were dead the moment McConnell inexplicably restored the stupid filibuster — by design. He did it to stop conservatives, not Democrats.
