(CNSNews.com) - The Obama White House says it welcomes comments by the new defense secretary about transgender people serving in the United States military.
"I've seen the reports of Secretary (Ash) Carter's comments," White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters on Monday. "I can tell you that the president agrees with the sentiment that all Americans who are qualified to serve should be able to serve. And for that reason, we here at the White House welcome the comments from the secretary of defense.
"But in terms of -- of additional steps that the Department of Defense will take to address this matter, I'd refer you to the secretary's office."
Speaking to U.S. troops in Kandahar, Afghanistan on Sunday, Carter was asked about his thoughts on "transgender service members serving in an austere environment" like that in Kandahar.

I can’t believe where we are as a country and a society sometimes.
We have lost common sense and reasoning ability.
Can’t we say that the military is very different from civilian life in some fundamental ways??
And that one of those differences is that the military simply can’t accomodate certain people with certain “issues”, shall we say. The military has a mission to fight and protect the homeland in physical battle, if necessary.
So, along those lines, can’t we say that a man who wants his blank cut off so he can be a girl, has some issues which will impair his ability to perform the missions required in the military???
Apparently we are not allowed to even pose such questions anymore.
To me, it’s fundamentally different to talk about “discrimination” in employment of trans-whatever peoples working as hired help in an office somewhere, vs. “discrimination” to keep such people out of military service. But because we apparently have to bend over backwards to prove how liberal we are, we aren’t allowed to talk about this.
In this era, “discrimination” against favored grievance groups is the holy grail. Anything which is discriminatory somehow against the favored groups is considered to be wrong and misguided, and we are not to question our superiors on such subjects.
Anyone who is ‘transgendered’ is mentally ill, and thus not capable of serving. The same could be arguably said regarding homosexuals.
When the bullets are flying, I’d rather not have someone who is mentally ill at my side on the battlefield.
