Newark mayor backs students occupying superintendent's office

Students holed up since Tuesday in the office of the Newark, N.J., school superintendent in an effort to force her to meet with them or resign gained a powerful ally Thursday -- the city's mayor.

"They're obviously frustrated about not being able to have a voice in what happens around their own education," Newark Mayor Ras Baraka said at a news conference outside of school district headquarters Thursday.

They're protesting Anderson's leadership of the school district, including school building assignments and her support for charter schools.

Another student said the protesters are surviving on chips and candy they brought in themselves Wednesday night.

"They are knowingly detaining our food," the student says. "As students, as people, we have a right to food. And we have a right to protest in this office."

Anderson is under contract with the state, not the city of Newark. (The state has taken over a few poorly performing school districts over the last 20 years.) Her contract is up for renewal March 1. She seems to be pissing off exactly the right people!

At the same time, the city’s most successful charter school chains will take over management of three district schools, fueling their explosive growth. Charters are on course to educate 40 percent of Newark kids by 2018, a change that is forcing mass layoffs in the district schools.

Talk to me when those landowners are no longer used as piggy banks, our property taxes lowered, and the indoctrination centers called ‘public schools’ are paid by those like EVERY OTHER SERVICE: by those that utilize them!

Or, when the People have a seat at the negotiating table for the unions that are somehow a ‘sacred cow’ above all else.....Some animals and all that, no? You were hired to do a JOB.
