Gov. Walker backs push to make Wisconsin right-to-work state

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Republican Gov. Scott Walker, a likely 2016 presidential candidate, announced Friday that he supports a surprise move by legislative leaders to quickly vote next week on a bill that would make Wisconsin a right-to-work state.

Walker had been urging Republicans who control Wisconsin's Legislature to hold off on the issue, saying it would distract from his agenda. But after a series of private meetings with lawmakers, followed by an announcement that the bill would be debated next week, Walker's spokeswoman said Friday that he would sign it.

"Governor Walker continues to focus on budget priorities to grow our economy and to streamline state government," his spokeswoman Laurel Patrick said in an email. "With that said, Governor Walker co-sponsored right-to-work legislation as a lawmaker and supports the policy."

Under right to work, private-sector workers would not be required to join a union or pay dues as a condition of employment. Twenty-four other states already have the laws in place.

Walker rose to prominence in 2011, when he pushed through a law known as Act 10 that effectively ended collective bargaining for most public workers. That led to protests involving as many as 100,000 people at the state Capitol and a 2012 recall election that Walker won.

Cleverly handled by Walker. It's a political technique known as "leading from behind", and it's a critical tool in the toolbox of a good governor or president. Warren Harding, Franklin Roosevelt and Jack Kennedy were masters of its use.

You take an issue you want to move forward on that is too politically hot to handle. You let others lead from in front and take the heat. Then you make it look like those crazy firebrands put a gun to your head to make you sign it.

Nicely done.

This is why this guy is politically smart. He always supported it, but if he, himself had initially pushed it, the libs there would have blew a gasket for months. Now they can push it fast and he can sign it fast.

Wonder if the Wisconsin Assembly/Senate Dem’s will simply run away to a neighboring state to prevent a quorum like they did last time around? I’m sure Ed Schultz must be having another meltdown right about now.

Hard and fast just like we did it in Michigan. It was only about 5 days total from beginning to end here in Michigan.

“This can’t be true according to the mentally superior FReepers who keep posting liberal and rino attacks on Walker!”

Walker is shaky on Amnesty, which is a legitimate concern. But the winds are changing on that, and his statements were when it was all the rage.

On literally every other issue, he’s solid.

All states should be right to work states. Unions are just for the leaders not for the workers. I was a member of a union and the leader had a mansion on 15 acres on the beach...

Unions are a scam...

Pointless exercise. The quorum requirement was limited to budget items.

Of course, dems being what they are (bat$h!t crazy)...

Walker is shaky on Amnesty...

Not true.

You cannot cite anything that shows him soft on illegal immigration.

He believes in securing the border and not giving illegals a easy path to citizenship.

What gets twisted is his statements that we need to make it easier for legitimate immigrants to work here because the current system sucks.

He specifically said that illegals should not get a free pass or path to citizenship.

He has been consistent on that throughout his career.

Wisconsin is not a sanctuary state and joined the other 25 states to sue Obama over his amnesty plan.

Anythig you know is twisted, liberal tripe or twisted by FReepers who see a RINO in every candidate....so, they become mouthpieces for the GOP-e and liberals.

You forgot Bill Clinton. He vetoed welfare reform three times before signing it. Having the perfect time to sign it and actually needing more workers in the work force and wanting to spend the money else where, he let the republicans push it forward and signed it right before the election where he traded for lots of democrat gifts to his donors.

I personally prefer Cruz but Walker is head and shoulders above Bush or Christie.

“You cannot cite anything that shows him soft on illegal immigration.”

Well, that’s not true. Here’s a story.

http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/309111-wis-gov-walker-backs-path-to-citizenship-in-immigration-reform-

And this one:

http://hotair.com/archives/2015/02/19/scott-walker-approved-milwaukee-county-resolution-backing-2006-mccain-kennedy-amnesty-bill/

This is enough to make people nervous, which is why I said that his statements were made when “immigration reform” was all the rage, which they were, when everybody thought that it was a done deal, and politicians like to move with the winds.

However, I just posted a story that says that “Obama made me more of an immigration hard-liner”. Whether he’s doing this out of political expediency or is actually changing his mind, the political winds are moving against Immigration Reform, and the politicians will move with it.

As I said, he get’s right on immigration (which he appears to be doing), he’ll be rock solid all the way.
