GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) Cold weather records continue to fall across West Michigan and more brutal cold is on the way.
Friday mornings low of -13 degrees in Grand Rapids tied the existing record low set in 1966. Hundreds of schools closed due to the extremely cold temperatures with wind chills colder than -20 degrees.
Thursdays high of 7 degrees in Grand Rapids was a new record for the coldest high temperature for the date, and were already on pace for this to be one of the coldest February months ever.
Well briefly warm to the upper 20s on Saturday before plunging back into the deep freeze with more Arctic air next week.
Lake Michigan is lagging behind the other four Great Lakes ice cover with 54% coverage. The Great Lakes total ice cover is 85% right now and expected to grow.
Another Arctic air mass is headed to West Michigan that could be just as cold or colder for the Great Lakes region next week.
Friday morning Storm Team 8 Meteorologist Matt Kirkwood tried a science experiment on the coldest morning of the season so far. He soaked an outfit in water and left it outside in the bitter cold for about an hour. Watch what happened next by clicking on the video player below or click here. (see video at link.)
We’re looking at a pretty late-season ICE STORM early next week here in Texas. This is unheard of.
-10 at TRI in upper East Tenn per hourly. I heard that they had a -13 between hourly posting.

Time for a reprint?
Can’t wait to see what Joe Bastardi says tomorrow!
Who knew that global warning would increase your chances of freezing to death just going to the 7-11 to get a pack of cigs?
GR just felt awful this morning. I could feel the cold seeping through the walls. Thankfully it isnt snowing!
I have no idea how anyone lived in this state in the 19th century. When summer rolls around (<- maybe), I swear I will be outside everyday thanking the good Lord for it!
Va is not much better, It is a whopping 19 deg. F in the Capitol of the Confederacy.
Key West, FL was 49 this morning and Havana, Cuba was in the low 50’s.
Ahhh....metro Cleveland. The temperature has gone up 15 degrees, to +3. I’m quite impressed how well everyone is coping. There’s been very little impact on emergency services. Today’s rather nice, cold but dry. Tomorrow, a few more inches of snow are forecast.
Breaking temp records in Pittsburgh PA. Wind chill ten degrees below zero this A.M.
Not really-- here in DFW a few years ago we had a few inches on Valentines Day. Also a few years ago we had a late Feb into March snow. The local kids did a little sledding. its infrequent but not unheard of this time of year-- maybe way down south texas.
“Theres been very little impact on emergency services.”
Betcha there has been a big impact on street crime, home invasions too. Impact to benefit us of course.
Yikes!
Yep: )
The Newsweek cover was over a year before this one. I remember it well. I was in college, and picked it up in the library. I was laughing my arse off.
This cold weather will surly be responsible for damaging our struggling economy . .
