Climate change report makes doomsday predictions for NYC

In a new report issued Tuesday, scientists painted a picture that could be even more frightening than the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. Climate change could hit New York with higher temperatures, dramatically rising sea levels, more rainfall and flooding, they said.

Temperatures are expected to jump 4.1 to 5.7 degrees by the 2050s — and by the 2080s, it could be 8.8 degrees hotter than the current average of 54 degrees, according to the study by the New York City Panel on Climate Change, a group of leading scientists assembled by the city.

By mid-century, the city could get five to seven heat waves a year compared to two currently, and the number of days over 90 degrees could double. The mercury is expected to crack 100 three to five days a year, compared to less than once every year.

“We expect temperatures to increase, precipitation likely to go up as well, and an acceleration of sea level rise,” said Radley Horton, a Columbia University scientist and panel member. “Sea level rise alone is going to increase the flood risk.”

Sea levels will increase 11 to 21 inches by the 2050s, 18 to 39 inches by the 2080s, and 22 to 50 inches by 2100, the group warned. And in the worst case scenario, the jump will be more than 6 feet if climate change goes unchecked.

It is now pretty clearly agreed that the CO2 content [in the atmosphere] will rise 25% by 2000. This could increase the average temperature near the earth’s surface by 7 degrees Fahrenheit. This in turn could raise the level of the sea by 10 feet. Goodbye New York. Goodbye Washington, for that matter.- - Presidential advisor Daniel Moynihan 1969

Move Where (to escape the cold)? The Brutal Buffalo (NY) winter might be common all over the United States. Climate experts believe the next Ice Age is on its way. According to recent evidence, it could come sooner than anyone expected. - In Search of - “The Coming Ice Age” 1978

[In New York City by 2008] The West Side Highway [which runs along the Hudson River] will be under water. And there will be tape across the windows across the street because of high winds. And the same birds won’t be there. The trees in the median strip will change. There will be more police cars. Why? Well, you know what happens to crime when the heat goes up... Under the greenhouse effect, extreme weather increases. Depending on where you are in terms of the hydrological cycle, you get more of whatever you’re prone to get. New York can get droughts, the droughts can get more severe and you’ll have signs in restaurants saying “Water by request only.” - James Hansen Grist Magazine June 1988

‘New York will probably be like Florida 15 years from now,’ - St. Louis Post-Dispatch Sept. 17, 1989

But this time they surely are right!!!!!

LOL! I was thinking that too, that they probably came up with this tripe because professional horticulturists/gardeners actually pump CO2 into greenhouses to help the plants grow and the heat is magnified and trapped by the glass of the greenhouse. So some genius lib one day probably walked into one of these and said “Wow it’s hot in here! It must be because of the CO2!” That HAS to be how it started because the percentage of CO2 in the atmosphere right now is miniscule, a trace gas at 0.04%. Methane even more ridiculously small at 0.00017% and how else would they come up with that conclusion unless they got it from some ridiculous source like an actual greenhouse? To go by the numbers alone and reach that conclusion is absurd. It’s like someone peeing in a lake then coming to the conclusion that the lake will now turn yellow. It’s insane thinking, so they must have started this myth from another source: Actual greenhouses! LOL! I think Venus is another source they could have gotten it from, but I looked it up and they said Venus became a greenhouse planet from WATER VAPOR! The water vapor came first THEN it trapped the CO2 but liberals can’t regulate the ocean and clouds can they. No “evil corporations” behind that. This whole thing is the biggest scam since PT Barnum and the Cardiff Giant, it really is the only difference is back then people weren’t forced to believe in the Cardiff giant and weren’t forced to pay extra money from everything they bought from “Cardiff regulations”.

NYC flooded? And destroyed? So what’s the problem?

The liberals that survive will move inland and closer too me!

The whole "greenhouse gas" concept was developed because the low-information types can grasp the idea of a greenhouse letting light through the glass and trapping the heat from the light inside.

Actually, it was developed to explain how Mars lost it's atmosphere.

I thought NYC was supposed to freeze due to Global Climate Change. That's what The Day After Tomorrow said.

"The sea level in the city has already risen by a foot over the last century, a faster increase than the rest of the world, the researchers found."

Then it was glommed-onto by the misanthrope crowd because they knew the low-information types could grasp it. Doesn’t matter if it was true or not on Mars.

That may have augmented the original 'concept', but the original came from explaining why Mars did not have much of an atmosphere. We didn't even know what the atmosphere of Venus was really like until the Russians sent some probes there. The first ones were crushed like tin cans by the intense atmospheric pressure.

New York City will be destroyed.

Nothing else that matters, will be damaged in the entire world.

Hundreds of years ago, an explorer once convinced the natives that the Moon would disappear if he and his men were not fed. When the Moon actually began to disappear, his situation improved greatly. Today is different. We know that global warming is a joke and we shouldn't feed the politicians. I do approve of Christoper Columbus. He knew exactly what he was talking about.

Parts of coastal Alaska have been rising for centuries due to isostatic rebound. Thus, the sea levels nearby are dropping but you don’t hear that mentioned.

Isn’t some of NY built on water reclaimed by filling it in? If I build a sand castle on the ocean beach...eventually it will be washed away.

NYC sinking is not really that outrageous a proposition.

Years ago there was a lot of talk that the area West of the Jefferson Memorial in DC was being flooded regularly from the Tidal Basin because the Potomac was rising due to global warming.

Turns out the area actually was sinking. Collapsing actually, due to shortcuts (like wood pilings that were deteriorating) taken during the memorial’s construction. Completely unrelated to global warming.

Iirc a while back, during the reconstruction of the WTC site, workers discovered a whole section of lower Manhattan that was built on the remains of 18th and 19th Century sailing ships that were deliberately sunk and covered over with dirt as landfill.

My opinion exactly. Water seeks its own level. If the water level has risen one foot in NYC, then it has risen 1 foot everywhere else in the world that has a coastline.

The problem as I see it is that there are too many people in Manhattan. Manhattan is an island and the weight of all these people is causing one end of it to depress; therefore the water level only appears to rise.

If NYC is not careful, the whole of Manhattan will simply tip over.

Similar to Guam!

Not just NYC but also most big coastal cities like Boston.

Not just coastal cities either. DC used to end a little beyond the Washington Monument. Constitution Ave from there up to the Capital was a creek (Tiber Creek) that was converted into a canal, then filled in and paved over.
