Born and raised in New Jersey, I left in 1988 thanks to a job offer in Houston. Employers in NJ at the time did not want to pay engineers, and at the time imposed a culture of conspicuous consumption (”image of success” “I wannabe an executive”). I know it’s been said many times in this thread already, but never consent to a search. The police are your enemy and delight in imprisoning you. Revenue generation for the state is their sole and overriding purpose and should be avoided at all cost.

Remain Silent, Ask for your attorney, Do NOT consent. You are required only to provide your name and address. These two answers make you compliant with NJ law. Say nothing more. Do not consent to search and insist your attorney be present during such search.

Most jack-boots will call the Shift Sergeant and get a K9, write you a ticket for something, but you'll get to go home.
