~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Naval Air Weapons Center, China Lake, California

The Naval Air Warfare Center, Weapons Division (NAWCWD) is an organization within the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR), dedicated to maintaining a center of excellence in weapons development for the Department of the Navy (DoN). NAWCWD has two locations in Southern California; China Lake hosting the land test range and Point Mugu hosting the sea test range.

Nestled in the quiet Indian Wells Valley at the south eastern foot of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California, China Lake is the premier land range and weapons development laboratory for the Department of the Navy.

The Indian Wells Valley is south of two prominent geologic extremes in the continental United States, Mount Whitney, the highest point (14,497 ft. above sea level) and Badwater, the lowest point (282 ft. below sea level). The area was once also home to the Native American Coso People, whose presence here is marked by thousands of archaeological sites; the Coso traded with other tribes as far away as San Luis Obispo County, California.

This locale was also a site used by European miners and settlers whose cabins and mining structures are extant throughout the Station. Among the notable archaeological sites is the National Park Service's Coso Rock Art District, an area of some 99 square miles which contains more than 20,000 documented petroglyphs.

China Lake is steeped in Naval History. In the summer of 1943 Dr. Charles C. Lauritsen of the California Institute of Technology, and Navy Commander Jack Renard, flew a small plane over the vast Mojave Desert in search of the perfect remote location to establish a "shooting range" for testing Navy missiles.

While service to the Fleet underlies every program at NAWCWD, direct support is the most important activity at China Lake. NAWCWD Fleet Weapons Support Teams are with naval forces throughout the world providing hands-on assistance. Division senior scientists and engineers serve in 1- to 3-year assignments as on-site Science and Technology Advisors stateside, at sea, and abroad.

New operational flight programs and weapons capabilities are taken directly to Fleet squadrons by NAWCWD teams who train aircrews and maintenance personnel aboard ship.

In times of conflict, the Division's Land, Sea, and Electronic Combat Ranges are made available to the Fleet for training, and development of urgently needed new weapons and electronic combat equipment is fast tracked. Prototype systems (such as the NAWCWD-developed Rapid Targeting System) are taken directly into world hot spots by Division teams to provide additional capabilities for the DOD warfighters.

The U.S. Naval Museum of Armament and Technology joins only 11 others across the country in telling the story of the U.S. Navy in peace and war. Located in China Lake, the museum at China Lake, "The U.S. Naval Museum of Armament and Technology" is full of intriguing technology and fascinating history that introduces visitors to the numerous contributions China Lake and the Navy have made to the defense of the nation.

ROAD TRIP

Good morning, Everyone.

Good morning to our

AWESOME

military, our allies, and their families

Thank you, Lauren, for preparing the Canteen
for today’s activities.

Ahhh, CA...warm weather.
Well, I'm happy to report that
I don't think that we got a foot of snow
at the Beachy homestead.
I haven't been out but it looks like maybe 6-8.
Most places are closed today, which is good;
allows roads and parking lots to get cleared.

It is 17 degrees this morning
(which is warmer than yesterday).
Please God, I am so ready for spring
and plenty of sunshine!

I'm off today and of course,
I still wake up early. UGH!

Yesterday was a holiday for me,
so I got an early start on running errands.
Now, I need to catch up on pings.

Please stay and keep the chat going.

So, come on in and sit for a while.
There's always plenty of coffee, tea
pancakes, conversation,
silliness, and plain old BS

REMEMBER THEM

DEFENDERS OF FREEDOM

FR CANTEEN MISSION STATEMENT

Showing support and boosting the morale of our military and our allied military and the family members of the above Honoring those who have served before.

Good morning Pro ((HUGS))

I almost didn’t speak to you this morning ;)
after your post yesterday. I think you got way too much enjoyment in pointing out (rubbing my nose?) the gorgeous weather you are having.

If our snow could make a decent snowball, I’d throw it at you. hehe

So glad you had a wonderful time with your daughter.

My weekend was pretty relaxing. We had a visit from one of the granddaughters on Saturday. Her brother and mother had something to do and she didn’t want to go, so she stayed with us. She’ll be 10 next month, so she can pretty much take care of herself; she has her rituals when she’s here.

Guess I’ll get dressed like a polar bear and take a ride to see how the roads are and how the car handles in the snow (haven’t done that since buying the SUV).

Hope you have a terrifically terrific Tuesday (and have plenty of sunshine).

It's going OK. School starts back up here in Comanche OK after a 5 day break. One unscheduled day Thursday due to the flu.

Now, I see that Kingston school over in SE OK are closed today and tomorrow due to flu. This is really making the rounds.

Morning Beachy!

Cheer-up, spring is a mere 5 weeks away; you'll be basking in sunshine and warmth in no time.

I guess you guys got hit pretty hard with the snow and cold, brrrr. Enjoy your day off and stay warm.

I still haven't gotten son-boy to go to "American Sniper" with me, might have to wait til the DVD comes out, I hate going to movies alone.

OK, working a bit later, stay bundled!

Boy, that’s scary that the flu is so prevalent in OK. Maybe y’all need snow and freezing temps to kill the viruses. Want mine? hehe

Howdy Pro ((HUGS))

Just got back from a drive around to check out the roads; they’re still bad but road crews are out.

I just saw the national weather map and that arctic blast coming in tomorrow night will push all the way down into Florida. Don’t know if I can take another 5 weeks of this. Farmer’s Almanac says snow into March.

Looks like we will see American Sniper when it comes out on DVD as well. I haven’t heard from anyone who has seen it in the theaters.

I will be inside and warm the rest of the day.

Have a blessed day. Don’t work too hard.
