The plight of the indentured servant was worse than the slave as the “owner” knew that when the terms of indenture were fulfilled, the servant got freedom. So the owners often worked the indentured ones for all they could before they were free.
Yes, and there were all sorts of tricks to extend the term beyond the original limit. For example, the owner would have to provide room and board to the servant by law, but they could rack up charges for clothing, tools, medical care, etc, and then add those to the debt that needed to be worked off.
