I don’t think they teach business math/household math in schools anymore. Put aside $40/50 a month in the good times until you get that rainy day fund.

But we spend it on booze or other non-essential items.

You can top up any cards at any wee post office or major/corner shop. No need to traipse across town. And the idea of a gas/electricity/other card isn’t goofy, I fail to see whats weird about it.

Not true. Sdaly there is a section of British socirty (white and black Caribbean) that sponges off the state, this current govt is the first to attack the problem.

Actually most UK muslims work, albeit too many younger UK Muslims (unlike earlier times) are falling into the leave school with nothing trap of their state sponging white and black mates.

Coin ops died out by the millennium, they were few and far between even by the late 90s.

I recall a television program (on BBC?) I saw while assigned to RAF Lakenheath, UK, similar to 60 minutes or Nightline.

They explored whether a family on government assistance needed a “cooker” and how much the government should pay to provide one.

And when something broke went to the library to borrow a manual and repaired the something that broke ourselves.

We had a VCR which was given to us broken, fixed it and then fixed it about twenty more times by taking it apart and cleaning it. Back then they were expensive and we no way had the money to replace it.
