#48 – Toni Basil: “Mickey”

Antonia Basilotta turns 72 this year. She was from Philly and was one of the greatest choreographers of her era, starting with ABC’s “Shindig” in the Sixties. She did some acting, and you can spot her in a small role in “American Graffiti”, among other films.

This song was originally titled “Kitty”, and it was a hit in the UK by a band called Racey. Toni recorded it in 1980, but it didn’t break until she choreographed the video, reaching back to her cheerleading days. It was one of the great dance tunes of the Eighties.

I ran across Toni in 1984 in a Spanish restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd. in West L.A. with a group of her friends, and I was amazed at just how tiny she was. I would guess four-ten or four-eleven at most. She was 39 when she recorded this video. Word is she still looks great.
