#84 – Laura Branigan: “Gloria”

Euro-rock was an idea that had started in Germany in the Seventies, with such bands as the Silver Convention. The idea was to have lyrics that consisted of repeated English words that formed the hook. Non-English speakers could catch on quickly, and the song could be an international hit. The repeated “Gloria” is the hook. But if you listen carefully past the upbeat rhythm and happy A Major melody, it’s a song about paranoia, psychosis and loss. It started out as an Italian song that was a hit in Italy in 1979, but it was updated for the synth-pop dance trend that was replacing Disco. (Thank God!) The lyrics add a hard edge to what sounds on the surface like a simple dance number.

Laura (1957-2004) had a four-octave range and an operatic quality alto voice. She came out of New York and was signed by Atlantic Records, who had a hard time categorizing her due to her long list of talents. This song put her on the charts. Her death at age 47 from a brain aneurism brought an abrupt end to a fine career.
