Apple hiring automotive experts to work in secret research lab

Apple is recruiting experts in automotive technology and vehicle design to work at a new top-secret research lab, said several people familiar with the company, pointing to ambitions that go beyond the dashboard.

Dozens of Apple employees, led by experienced managers from its iPhone unit, are researching automotive products at a confidential Silicon Valley location outside the company’s Cupertino campus, the people said.

Sir Jonathan Ive’s team of Apple designers has held regular meetings with automotive executives and engineers in recent months, in some cases trying to hire them. Recent recruits to Apple’s team include the head of Mercedes-Benz’s Silicon Valley R&D unit.

The Apple research lab was set up late last year, not long after Apple unveiled its forthcoming smart watch and latest iPhones, which suggests that any resulting product may still be years away from release. Apple often investigates a wide range of new product areas, some of which never get released.

Apple should hire some software engineers - especially network device stack engineers - to fix bugs in their OS!

Then Apple should hire some software engineers - especially application engineers - to update the "pro" software they put out 10 years ago that pro users now depend on, but that aren't getting updated!

They need to focus on what they promised customers they'd focus on.

Software laden vehicles that require wifi software updates every 6 minutes. That sounds fun. Plus, you’ll probably need a software engineer instead of a mechanic half the time.

I’m with Scotty on this one:

There are persistent rumors that iOS 9.0--due in September--will be like the Snow Leopard release of MacOS X; it will essentially be mostly bug fixes and "tightening" the code to run faster and with less system resources used.

Google is way ahead of Apple in the self-driving car category.

I’ll bet that’s what Apple is going for.

I don’t care how good it is, I don’t want one. No Googlemobile, no Applemobile.

They’ll have to tear my 6-speed shifter from my cold, dead hands.

Oh great! Can’t wait for the over styled, overpriced cars that owners can’t fix or modify. Plus the drive train and power supply will be locked so when it runs down you need a new one.

The Apple fan boys pants will never dry...

Why don’t the ars hats fix iMovie so it works. The adjusting colors, brightness, contrast and sharpness etc work like crap. And you cannot edit WMV. And no matter what they do to it it will never work on older OS. Apple is becoming a pile of crap.
