Brian Williams’s Truth Problem, and Ours
National Review ^ | 2/12/2015 | Victor Davis Hanson

Posted on 02/12/2015 6:11:16 AM PST by Servant of the Cross

The NBC anchor’s lies are symptomatic of a culture in which truth has become relativized.

NBC Nightly News anchorman Brian Williams frequently fabricated a dramatic story that he was under enemy attack while reporting from Iraq. NBC is now investigating whether Williams also embellished events in New Orleans during his reporting on Hurricane Katrina.

Williams always plays the hero in his yarns, braving natural and hostile human enemies to deliver us the truth on the evening news.

Former CBS anchorman Dan Rather tried to pass off fake memos as authentic evidence about former President George W. Bush’s supposedly checkered National Guard record.

CNN news host Fareed Zakaria, who recently interviewed President Obama, was caught using the written work of others as if it were his own. He joins a distinguished array of accused plagiarists, from historian Doris Kearns Goodwin to columnist Maureen Dowd. (snip)

Punishment is calibrated by the stature of the perpetrator. If the offender is powerful, then misremembering, misstating, and misconstruing are considered minor and aberrant transgressions. If not, the sins are called lying and plagiarizing, and deemed a window into a bad soul. Thus a career can be derailed. (snip)

The Greek word for truth was aletheia – literally “not forgetting.” Yet that ancient idea of eternal differences between truth and myth is now lost in the modern age.

Our lies become accepted as true, but only depending on how powerful and influential we are — or how supposedly noble the cause for which we lie.

The blame for the 'truth problem' lays at the feet of the corrupt DNC-run media. They have manipulated the news for decades solely to aggrandize themselves and their personal power or prestige, and of course that of their masters at the DNC.

The press/media, whose reason for existence is to be the "Fourth Estate", and speak 'truth to power' no matter who is running the government. But they have crawled into bed with their masters at the DNC. Disgusting. Repugnant. Scum.

Well, maybe but really only a little bit. Our real problem with truth is not believing what God says about us, our sinful nature that’s in rebellion to Him and being willing to come to Him for His solution. I know there are many lesser spins on this but it starts here. “I am the way the Truth and the Life. No man comes to the Father but by me.” - Jesus

Contemporary postmodern thought sees the “truth” as a construct. The social aim of these fantasy narratives is what counts. If they serve progressive race, class, and gender issues, then why follow the quaint rules of evidence that were established by an ossified and reactionary establishment?-

and that's the nub of it.
And they expect pus all to believe that their fantasies are true because they said them, not because they described events that actually happened, even if the truth is obvious. Sometimes they are trying to illustrate what they think goes on in the minds of unenlightened commoners by saying that these things they imagine us to be thinking actually happen.

Provable lying to the public, rather under oath or not, should be a crime punishable by disbarment from holding public office or any position that involves informing the public.

In a sane and just world, this would go without any need to be said. We are clearly not in a just or sane world.

If the proven lies of 0bama had been committed by George W. Bush (or any gop president), the press would have hounded them out of office long ago.

“The ends justify the means.”

This Marxist article of faith excuses lefties for lying. Lying is a basic tool for them.

I agree. Men reject truth because the truth is: God lives, and is coming again “to judge the living and the dead”. That is the truth that drives men to seek lies.

As we go from a post Christian nation to an anti-christian nation, truth will be valued by fewer and fewer people.
