60 Minutes correspondent Bob Simon died Wednesday evening in a car accident in New York.
The CBS newsman was riding in a livery cab that struck another car and then crashed into a median on the West Side Highway, his network confirmed.
Simon, the recipient of 24 Emmy awards, began regularly contributing to the Sunday-night newsmagazine in 1996. He also was a correspondent for 60 Minutes II; when that series wrapped in 2005, he worked full-time on 60 Minutes.

Sorry to see this news. But to a very small degree it reminds me of the limousine lifestyle of NY. Makes me think of someone like Rosie O'Donnell or Whoopi Goldberg, or even Katie Couric making remarks like how bad traffic was or how high the price of gas is. All of those folks have drivers, who themselves have drivers. They are so far separated from the life of the average American, why would it surprise anyone that they think the laws of physics (and the need for seatbelts) do not apply to them?

The first time I heard of Louis Zamperini was in a remarkable 60 Minutes story and interview by Bob Simon at the time of the Nagano Winter Olympics. He tracked down and interviewed The Bird. Chilling. When I read Unbroken several years ago, I recalled that story and viewed it again on YouTube. That, if nothing else, is my tribute to the late Bob Simon.

I just finished reading the book. I’m going to have to watch that interview. It’s almost unimaginable that anyone could be as evil as The Bird.

I just find it interesting that whenever someone prominent dies, there is a contingent who immediately has to determine whether or not that person is worthy of being lamented based on political affiliation. They immediately dive into the persons background to determine if they should be mourned or mocked.
Its pathetic. And childish. The dead are dead. Let them rest.
