I have relatives in Prescott, and I have visited many times. Prescott College is known as “the hippie college” around those parts. You can spot its student body around town, because they are the white kids with dreadlocks, walking around barefoot, with arms full of poorly done tattoos.

When I lived in Arizona, I remember the 1971 movie "Billy Jack" was filmed there. From Wikipedia:

In the second film, Billy Jack, the hero defends the hippie-themed Freedom School and students from townspeople who do not understand or like the counterculture students.

Sounds like not much has changed.

The only thing that changed is that you have a lot more older lefty transplants who retired there now too (my parents included unfortunately). So, it’s not just the townies vs the hippies, it’s the “good old boys” vs the hippies and the grey-haired granola munchers together.
