The Magna Carta, between King John and rebel barons, dates back to 1215 and outlines basic rights with the principle that no one was above the law, including the king.

Actually, the Magna Carta was the statement of the bishops and barons saying that the king had to recognize their God-given liberties. The bishops and barons spoke for all the English with the document and eventually all the people took it as their own. Henry VIII egregiously ignored it and destroyed the infrastructure of liberty that the English people had created without the help of the king.

A king ignoring the Magna Carta never nullified the idea it represented.
