Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal on Monday said Republicans advocating for fewer debates between presidential contenders in the GOP primaries are trying to make it more difficult for voters to nominate a conservative candidate.
Theres this idealistic belief, this idea that, if we could just have fewer debates, wed have a kinder, gentler nominating process, and itd be easier to get the right nominee, Jindal said at a briefing hosted by The Christian Science Monitor in Washington. Well, democracy is messy, and political leaders and the establishment leaders arent going to be the ones picking the nominee.
Some of those who are wringing their hands about the nominating process, what theyre really thinking, and they dont say this out loud is, well, we just need less conservative candidates, he added. "I think thats nonsense. I think the reality is that America doesnt need two liberal parties. Theres nothing wrong with having a principled conservative candidate."
The remarks are a veiled swipe at Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus and others in the party who have advocated for fewer debates.
The RNC has announced nine presidential debates, beginning in August. There were 20 GOP primary debates in the 2012 cycle, a number many in the party think was too high.
I think a lot of the folks who are complaining about the process are really complaining that they dont want someone who is too conservative and really wants to repeal ObamaCare, Jindal said Monday. Im glad that its not the
political class, Im glad its the voters who will decide.

Nine is more than enough. Less time for the MSM to slice and dice the Republican Party.
It was really disgusting that the Republicans allowed every debate to be moderated by left-wing hacks.
Well, I’d say 9 is enough...if we had actual debates instead of soundbite factories.
Most on the stage honing their skills of bloviation instead of answering the question or getting to the point (yes, I do understand the Left will blast ‘em at every turn with Leftist questions...there was a surprise there?? It was unfortunate that only Newt has the fortitude to lay one low).
Plus, I hadn’t heard, in many a year, anything BUT platitudes to the Constitution, nor our Republic. Why should I care to listen, let alone vote, for the lesser or the ‘you wanna, I gotta’ crowd? Does it matter how fast we arrive in the hand-basket?? Wake me when anyone hears any plan to REDUCE gov’t.
We had like 50 last time. Didn’t help us.
We don’t need more debates, we need our candidates to get out of the way of each other as the process progresses.

You beat me to the point. The number of debates isn’t so important. Nine or nineteen or whatever — AOK.
But when time after time, you allow Dhimmi henchmen like Jorge Stephanopolos to run a debate, you’ve already lost half the battle.
I agree. In 2012 they had 20 debates and most were with lefty moderators so it was just more chances for the leftards to make the GOP look bad. If the GOP has not learned their lesson then what can be done about it?
Every GOP debate should be with either neutral moderators or our own. I’d like to see some folks like Brett Baier, Mark Levin, Rush, Thomas Sowell etc moderate some of these debates.

Was there any moderator who wasn’t a lefty?
Totally agree. There is zero need to have a left wing media hack involved in any way. You just need one person to read questions and keep time. I'll know when the GOP wakes up when they STOP allowing liberal media hacks to undermine what should be an important aspect of an election, primary debates.
I think there were two FOX news debates although one of them was with Chris Wallace and Meghyn Kelly so little difference from Candy and Stephie. I believe one was with Brett Baier and it was well done.
