The Beauty of Better Call Saul (Starts Tomorrow!!!)
The Atlantic ^ | February 7, 2015 | Spencer Kornhaber

Posted on 02/07/2015 9:22:38 AM PST by PJ-Comix

To talk about Breaking Bad's greatness, you have to talk about Walter White. You have to talk about showrunner Vince Gilligan’s now-famous vow to turn “Mr. Chips into Scarface”; you have to talk about tightie-whities giving way to rubber lab coats, about high-school chemistry lessons leading to a machine gun laying waste to a Nazi meth gang. Bryan Cranston's character's five-season transformation from zero to antihero had no precedent on TV, and made for tense, morally challenging viewing.

Take out Walter and his journey, though, and do you still have a masterpiece? Better Call Saul, the new spinoff whose premiere and second episode air Sunday and Monday respectively, suggests that the answer might have been “yes.” Gilligan and co-creator Peter Gould have improbably constructed something that feels like a continuation of its predecessor but not a retread, telling a new tale with their old show's trademark meticulousness, gravity, humor, and, beauty.

I was watching a BB episode repeat this week. The one where Skyler feigns suicide by walking in the pool during a dinner party. She was fearfull for their children’s safety.

The augument with Walt later was some of the best wtiting and acting I’ve seen anywhere.

Better Call Saul kicks off with a B&W sequence of Saul experiencing his own personal nightmare in Omaha.

Breaking Bad was a dammed TERRIFIC show! (and I hate watching TV lol)

I’m a bit torn as to which one I like more: Breaking Bad or The Walking Dead. I believe I like The Walking Dead just a little more.

I hope Better Call Saul ranks right up there with the other two, but I don’t expect it to. It has to be tough to make shows THAT good. What are the chances of having three of them on the same cable network?

I resisted watching BB for a few years, then got sucked in when I finally decided I had to see what all the fuss was about.

Have not seen a single episode of TWD yet—the ads look terrible and I cannot see how that is a compelling storyline. Should I try it?

Probably gonna turn into Mike the murderer, and Gus the cartel king.

Hope it doesn't, will have to wait and see.

It is as good, but different. Aside from zombie splatter, it is a good apocalypse story.

One word: yes.

My sister-in-law and her husband thought we were silly for loving a “zombie” show. They finally gave in and got completely hooked. And she hates the horror genre.

TWD isn’t about zombies...it’s just great drama.

The final scene of BB (masterpiece)

The music chosen is what I thought was simply perfect. As he lays dying, the music starts: "Guess I got what I deserved ..."

I resisted as well; but, during one summer when we had nothing to watch Hubby and I decided to give WD a try (the first season was on Netflix). I found the characters interesting enough to keep on watching.

It has it's ups and downs; but, I think overall, it is a good show. It is violent and bloody at times (zombies!); but you care about the people involved. Some people hated the season at Hershel's farm; but, I didn't mind it that much. There was a big shocker in that episode, and the zombie herd was horrifying.

I hope they get Jackie Chiles (the black lawyer in Seinfeld) to come on as a guest.

Yeah, we watched Z-Nation and enjoyed it. We didn’t think the acting or writing was near as good as TWD, but then I don’t think Z-Nation was trying to be. It comes off as just a fun show you can get into.
