NBC should fire Brian Williams.
It’s not just because the face of its news division has become the trending punch line on social media after his harrowing account of a near-death experience in Iraq was exposed as false. It’s not just because his explanation for the discrepancies in fact were simply absurd, or because his apology was more parsed than abject.
It’s because he fabricated a story.
This is one line in journalism that must never be crossed, should never be rationalized and can never be mitigated by any sum of years of honorable service in the profession.

Williams told his terminally embellished versions of the forced-landing story most notably to David Letterman on the “Late Show” two years ago, then repeated it on the “NBC Nightly News.”
“I have to treat you with renewed respect,” Letterman told Williams after hearing of the quick, hard landing in the desert. “That’s a tremendous story.”
If only it were true.
It was remarkable — disturbing, actually — that none of his NBC colleagues who were also on the helicopter intervened to stop the false narrative. Had they done so, and if Williams had listened, he and a proud network’s news division — the top-rated evening newscast in the 25-to-54-year-old demographic — would have been spared their current agony.

Regrettably, the damage does not end at NBC.

What would be newsworthy would be if a journalist fabricated a story and kept his job.

NBC needs to do the right thing, for its sake and ours.

Even Tom Brokaw is calling for Lyin’ Brian to be fired, now.
Given that NBC still employs Al Sharpton, Matt Lauer, David Gregory and Ed Schultz, I guess I’ll believe any punishment when I see it.
As in the victories of so-called conservatives in the recent elections.
I can only conclude that their invitation to Bibi was more an act of God rather than principled conservatism.
It would be better for America, I think, if NBC clasps him tightly and refuses to fire him. It will prove instructive to the many people who heretofore have accepted every word they hear the grave anchors speak. Perhaps they will develop a bit more of a skeptical attitude to the whole TV news genre.

I think they should let Williams and Hillary fly in the same airplane over Afghanistan and let them fight it out.
It's not because he fabricated a story. This is NBC, after all. Remember the Zimmerman tape. It's not because keeping him would mean they approve of what he did. They do.
It's because Williams has accidentally shown the nation and the world the true face of the so-called "mainstream" media. He has shown that they really do operate on the principle Dan Rather enunciated to Bill O'Reilly on May 15, 2001: "I believe you can be an honest person and lie about any number of things."
They cannot allow people to see their true face. So Williams will have to go before people figure out the con that the liberal media has been perpetrating for 60 years or more.

Williams hasn’t done anything that Dan Rather or Walter Cronkite or any of the others didn’t do. It’s just that he (and Rather) did it sloppily and got caught.
Which is the exact same reason Obama did authorize taking our bin Laden. Al Qaeda has been much more effective since he died.

Which makes him your typical network "journalist".
Like Brian Williams, Dan Rather, and David Brock, Jen Psaki is just doing what she is paid to do.
