I tried to post a comment yesterday about the truth behind the inquisition and it was removed by the moderator... no idea why. The Spanish inquisition targeted Jewish citizens of spain who had converted to Catholicism. Most accusations of heresy were made out of envy and greed. Punishments were carried out by Ferdinand and Isabella, not crazed Catholic monks, and pope Sixtus actually wrote to Ferdinand asking him to stop. I would guess that many people would rather demonize the Catholic Church than know the truth.

I’ve argued for a long time that the inquisition(s) were the first stirrings of due process. Previously, it was the torches and pitchforks, the lynchings - then the Church stepped in and gave you a trial and then burned you alive. I know, not a huge difference to the person being burned alive but still, at least he/she got that day in court.
Also that the Crusades were a defensive war. Great stuff. I always enjoy Jonah’s perspective.
