I don't see how his fib would save his job, even if anyone believes it. Newscasters to do their jobs cannot be "mis-remembering" things.

Maybe he spent Christmas in Cambodia with John Kerry (who served in the Vietnam war on both sides no less). This is standard operating procedure.
