HUNTSVILLE — One of the infamous "Texas 7" fugitives was executed by lethal injection Wednesday night.

Donald Newbury was put to death for his role in the murder of an Irving police officer on Christmas Eve in 2000.

He was serving 99 years in prison for robbery when he escaped from the Connally Unit in December 2000 with six other inmates. After committing more crimes in Houston they traveled to North Texas where they were caught robbing the Oshman's sporting goods store off Highway 183 in Irving.

Dispatchers called Officer Aubrey Hawkins away from dinner with his young son to respond to the call.

"He was killed in such a savage way," recalled Toby Shook, former Dallas County prosecutor. "After they killed him the drug his body from the car. They drove over his body with the car and they took his gun as a souvenir. Newbury never expressed any remorse really."

Even on death row, Newbury got in trouble 55 times for assaulting guards among other things, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Irving Police officers stood silently, side-by-side, as the execution happened.

Three more of the "Texas 7" remain on Death Row. Another killed himself to avoid capture. Two have already been executed.

Fifteen years. It took 15 years of three-hots-and-a-cot for this to happen.

And there’s still three more to go.

Many of these perpetrators are drug addicts so "lethal injection" becomes an encouragement to do more heinous crimes to get the ultimate high.

Old Sparky needs a comeback.

Even in Texas, it took almost 15 years to give this devil his due, and the taxpayers are still paying the blood-sucking lawyers to keep the other three murders of this policeman alive on Death Row. The old rope-and-tree justice was much more efficient and practically free to the taxpayers. Texas ought to consider reviving it in cases like this.

The Texas Seven

Rivas and Rodriguez were executed earlier. Harper committed suicide during their escape on Dec. 31, 2000 and wasn't capture alive. Three are left awaiting execution.

God Bless his family!

We’ve obviously become a society that hates justice and defends evil. These seven should have been executed within an hour of conviction.

Should have daisy chained them for a mass execution.

Too bad the right to a speedy trial doesn’t come with the correlary of a speedy execution of the sentence.

There are individuals that can never be reformed, and who should be executed early in their careers before they have a chance to create misery that no amount of punishment can undo.

“Newbury got in trouble 55 times for assaulting guards among other things”...

And that was while he was already in custody, can you imagine the stuff he did before he got to the slammer?

Newbury should have been lowered slowly into a wood-chipper or a vat of acid.

I become very liberal when it comes to the death penalty. I believe in giving the murderer a choice between hanging and the firing squad.

The firing squad was considered an honorable way to die in the past. Hanging was for low lifes.

Bring back the rope!

HANGING JUDGE PARKER, Judge ROY BEAN! Where are you when we need you!
