He should have been able to shoot the knife out of her hand, just like in the movies.
Given all i have read about reaction time, Tueller drill, etc. i am surprised he only fired one round. Having taken a tactical knife fighting class, and taking level 2 when available, i learned never to get in a knife fight situation. They are vomit inducing brutal.
