Upcoming Super Bowl will be first to be lit with energy-efficient LED lights
Energy Information Administration ^ | JANUARY 30, 2015 | Energy Information Administration

Before the start of the 2014 NFL regular season, University of Phoenix Stadium in Arizona, home to Super Bowl XLIX, retrofitted 312 high-performance light-emitting diode (LED) stadium light fixtures. The LED fixtures replaced more than 780 metal halide high-intensity discharge (HID) fixtures and will illuminate the field during the Super Bowl on February 1.

University of Phoenix Stadium was the first stadium in the NFL to light its playing field using only LEDs. The new lights draw approximately 310 kilowatts of energy compared with the 1,240 kilowatts required by the old system, a savings of about 75%. Assuming an electricity cost of 15 cents per kilowatthour, that means the new LED lighting costs about $47 per hour to light the field, compared to $186 per hour using the HID lighting system. Lighting maintenance costs for LEDs are also expected to be lower. The vendor also projects a 30% decrease in stadium cooling costs as a result of the LED fixtures, which generate less heat than HID lights. Given the limited hours that stadium field lighting is used, there are other considerations beyond energy costs and savings for selecting LED lighting. The light output from LEDs may allow for better color representation and more detail during televised viewing, especially during slow-motion replays, improving picture quality as consumers adopt higher definition displays. In addition, the LED lights turn on without the 15-20 minute warmup period required by metal halide and other HID lamps. In the unlikely event of a power failure such as occurred during Super Bowl XLVII at the Superdome in New Orleans, LED field lighting could return as soon as power was restored.

Although University of Phoenix Stadium was the first NFL stadium to light the playing field exclusively using LEDs, it is not the only NFL venue using the technology. Levi's Stadium in San Francisco uses LED lighting to illuminate 40% of the stadium, and NRG Stadium in Houston recently installed 480 luminaires with 650,000 individual LEDs to help light the playing field.

Exactly. CFLs are the Allende of light bulbs and LEDs are the Pinochet.

Sorry if I gave the impression I didn't like Fenix. I had a TK-10 that died after several years. I like them enough I spent more money on a TK-35 that is still the brightest battery powered light I own. The -35's center hot spot is better defined and slightly smaller and more focused (which I like) than the Coleman's. Also the spill illumination pattern is more even with the -35.

I'd buy another Fenix, in fact I probably will at some point. I'm saving up to get a small Surefire - mostly just for comparison. Something along the lines of one of the variants of P2X or P3X. But those are $165 to $250 for 500 to 1000 lumens. Comparable lights from Fenix might be a TK-15 (400 lumens, $75), or TK-09 (450 lumens, $60), or a PD35 (960 lumens, $70). All roughly the same form-factor. Having had a couple of Fenix's I kind of want to see if the Surefires are worth the 2x+ price tag.

I don’t know why you don’t just send in the 7 year old TK-10 from the old days, and have them repair or replace it.

I also don’t know why you would waste money on a Surefire instead of buying another Fenix, a Surefire which most flashlight people now think of as being overpriced and slow to improve.

I EDC an LD01 and a PD35.

Grin, in all honesty I didn't send the TK-10 back to get repaired 'cause I'm stupid. Or more kindly, it was an excuse to get a newer bigger/badder light. Yeah, let's go with that.

As for the Surefire, you'll note I'm not sold on one yet. Again speaking completely candidly I don't need another light. In fact I could lose/destroy several lights before I'd get to the point of "needing" another light. (shh, don't tell Mrs. TS I said that)

The next light I get will be small. The Coleman and the TK-35 are very bright (900 lumens on the TK-35 on high and I think something like 700 for the CT-70). However, both are medium/big. I'd like something small like the TK-10, something that uses say 2 CR-123s or a single 18650. Finally, I'll be looking for at least 500 lumens, preferably 1000 or more as technology improves. Until this thread came up I hadn't checked-in on flashlight tech in a little while. I see Fenix has several lights that meet those specs right now. Hmm, when I get my tax refund... Wait, didn't I say I don't *need* another light? ;-)

You realize with this discussion you may have gotten someone to change their mind based on an internet discussion... When does that ever happen?

I’m concerned that this lighting change will affect the air pressure in the footballs being used. /s

Unless you threw it out, send in the TK-10 for repair or replacement.

Flashlights that accept both 18650 “AND” CR-123s are nice.

What do you use the light for, and how are you on headlamps?

>>The new lights draw approximately 310 kilowatts of energy compared with the 1,240 kilowatts required by the old system, a savings of about 75%.

That difference represents a savings of about 265 tons of air conditioning, assuming they need to run mechanical refrigeration vs. just ventilation with cool outside air. Which is probably the case for any number of games in AZ. Your home unit is typically about 3 tons, for comparison.

The energy savings in not having to run that much air conditioning is probably around 1/3 of the direct lighting kW savings, so around another 310 kW saved on top of the 930 in lighting operation saved.

. . . . . . .

I would have expected it takes more than a kilowatthour of energy to remove a kilowatt hour of heat.

Definitely not so. You can play around with EER ratings and convert the BTUs to KWs to see that.

That’s the whole point of a good mechanical refrigeration system - you manage to move more heat than the energy input, a lot more.

If it was really a free market, I could go buy a 100W incandescent from the local store. If people want to choose CFL or LED, fine. But, I didn’t need Kate Upton’s uncle to take the choice away from me.

What would I use my next light for? If it is roughly the same form factor as the TK-10 it might end up as an EDC or in the console of my car. Right now I have an Energizer® Hardcase Professional LED Task Light in the console. It is ABS construction, water resistant, gives about 250 lumens, takes 2 AA batteries. It is the right size to have handy.

Then I might shift the Energizer to my get-home bag in the back of the car, displacing the older Innova X05 (I think that's it). The Innova is nice, hard aluminum body, good beam. But I've come to not like the twist (several times) to tighten tailcap to turn on. Also, being an older technology LED it tends to burn through -123s (especially the rechargeables) pretty fast. So the Energizer and a couple of pairs of spare batteries would displace it.

What do I actually use lights for? In the past few months let's see... Work lights working around the house on minor projects. Work light under the hood of my car. Carry light when I'm in town at night (not the only thing I'm carrying ;-) Walking my dog at night, setting up gear at night outdoors. (long story) Camping in the mountains and in the desert. Helping a couple of young girls search for a dropped ring in a supermarket parking lot. (found it!) Flagging down traffic to slow them at an accident site.

I don't expect one light to be good at all these things, that's why I have several. Well, that's what I tell myself, actually I just like to have several around and choices. Camping and setting up gear at night I tend to use the bigger lights, the Coleman and/or the TK-35. I also have a rechargeable Coleman electric lanterin for ongoing illumination and a Porter-Cable work light that shares battery packs with my cordless drill. The smaller form factors are what I like for a EDC type light. Something you have on you or with you at all times. Also, where I work is in the basement of a rather large building. In the event of a power failure or evac I like to have a light with me just in case the battery powered emergency lights don't work. For that I keep a couple of the el-cheapo AAA powered LED lights at my desk. Just enough to illuminate the floor in front of me as I crawl out if necessary.

As for headlamps, never really got into them. I guess they help keep your hands free for some things. In other cases I like to be able to point and direct the light by hand without having to move my head.

On this site it’s this way with any new technology that has any hint of government intervention in the market. The technology cannot be decoupled from the policy by people on this site. It’s almost willful ignorance...

The Fenix PD35 is hard to beat as an EDC and all round light. I carry it on my belt.

Turbo: 960 Lumens (1 hour 10 min.)
High: 460 Lumens (3 hours 15 min.)
Mid: 180 Lumens (10 hours)
Low: 50 Lumens (38 hours)
Economy: 14 Lumens (150 hours)

For a headlamp that uses the same battery (both of these lights use either a 18650 battery, or two CR123A batteries, this should blow your mind.

It gives lumens, but it has a slide switch that gives you total control over brightness.

Some high quality headlamps have good flood that lights up the entire area, it doesn’t have the small focused beam that they all used to have, and that are good for running or bicycling, when you don’t want to outrun your focused beam.

Some head lamps like the one I linked, are powerful enough to do both throw, and flood at the same time.

Yeah, since we started talking about this I’ve been looking at the PD35 (2014). That might well be my next EDC light. I like my others, but I don’t have a small powerful light in that form factor. The Coleman CT-70 and Fenix TK-35 have been great at what I use them for, but they are a bit big to stick in a pocket or throw in my messenger bag every day. The MagLite XL50 I have is the right size, but can’t hold a candle (pun intended) to the PD-35 for light output or versatility.

Here is a video on repair/maintenance of Fenix lights including the TK10.

Usually it is a cleaning of the threads, or a tightening of the switch ring.

I hate LED lights, but it is from an aesthetics perspective; the light is cold looking. Prefer the warmth of yellow-hued lighting

Oh, they have yellow LEDs, also blue, red, green...even ones that can change color.
