My first reaction was that this is utter narcissism on display. My second was more tempered. Thinking about this women I see someone who is educated, successful career-wise, well traveled, financially independent, and with high standards when it comes to men. What has she wanted? A good marriage, and I assume, children. She wants the "happily ever after" that most women want. But at 40 she realizes that her dreams are unlikely to come true. And to top it off, she is a Black female. The pool of educated Black males is substantially smaller than Black females. (Statistically, twice as many black women as black men graduate from college each year.) And college educated black males are less likely marry than college educated males from other races. Black females are twice as likely to never marry as compared with every other group. So, by age 40 the odds of an educated Black women marrying an educated Black male are pretty slim. This woman is facing that fact, but she still wants the wedding. She wants the dress. She wants to be the bride. She wants the celebration that she will not get to enjoy. But she does it anyway. She is making a statement that she is going to enjoy her life even though it did not turn out exactly as she had hoped. She is a strong woman and will do fine on her own. Her family and friends are celebrating with her. I wish her well.

A well thought out, sensitive comment like that has no place on this thread! ;-)

I was thinking along those lines too but I don't see why she had to say she couldn't just throw herself a major party without the "Marriage" thrown it.

I married late in life, long after I had decided that I was just no good at relationships and given up on courtship and dating. I understand how she feels about hitting those milestones without finding someone to love and be loved in return.

But the way she went about it just does not sit right.
