My Problem with Sarah Palin

With Sarah Palin once again hinting at a presidential run, pundits and politics wonks are all the more aflutter with 2016 talk. The predictable slings and arrows of the surly left are coming her way, while her excited fans are firing up the troops. Then there are those who say that while they like the ex-governor, they don’t believe she could win the presidency. My focus, however, is a bit different: I have an objection to Palin -- one relating to something of which most are unaware.

Before getting to that, please indulge me as I ask a few questions that establish where we all stand. Are you adamantly pro-life, or might your position change if (as in polling) the question is framed as a woman’s “right to choose”? Do you stand foursquare against amnesty, or could you be persuaded to accept a “path to citizenship” for illegals? Do you uphold the proper and only definition of marriage, or have the unrelenting attacks on tradition worn you down to a point where you might conclude, “Well, none of this affects me, anyway”?

If you’re unwavering on all those issues, as I am, you’re a real Sarah Palin conservative.

Or are you?

You see, I’m pretty sure how Palin would answer those questions -- and one answer is a real problem.

On October 26, 2008, Palin had an interview with Jorge Ramos of Spanish-language network Univision. She was asked about amnesty: “So you support a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants?”

Her answer: “I do because I understand why people would want to be in America. To seek the safety and prosperity, the opportunities, the health that is here.

These Palin pieces are annoying.

I think most people really miss the point of why it is important to elect or keep Sarah Palin in power.

She humiliates the wicked intellectual culture that harms us all every day.

the community of liars that fill the news everyday need to LOSE and lose badly.

Nothing would offend THEIR sensibilities more than if Palin were in charge and/or important.

Conservatives who pretend she is damaged goods— miss the point.

Until this collective insult machine is damaged severely all conservative candidates will be annihilated.

This was done to Quayle in 1992. It is done again and again. It was attempted with Bush in 2000 and it almost worked.

We must defend people like Palin and demoralize these dangerous agitators. Governor Martinez has been intimidated. Bachmann ODonnell and Angle are all casualties in the true war in women.

The smearers hate hate hate conservative women and african americans. They will destroy them unless we refuse to give up on them.

In all honesty, Does anyone really think that Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi are either more intelligent or accomplished than Palin?

I really don’t think they are. But the racket that supports those two— it works every day to mock anyone who disagrees with those two empty headed democrats. We have to be equally fervent as a group.

I keep talking about her? She is the subject of the only 2 threads I have mentioned her in in the last 6 months, no? Should I give my opinion on George Bush or John McCain on threads about her instead?

Another writer discovers that putting “Palin” in the title gets readers.

Yeppers. And a Palin thread here at FR is good for - oh - about 100 replies.

From die-hard Palinistas and from PDS’ers.

But even the Palinistas with their “She lives rent-free in their heads” schtick that is old and tiresome are now agreeing that Sarah is at minute 14.

Palin is one of the few who has a vibrant track-record of going after such corruption.

That is my only requirement for a candidate. Newt meets that criteria as well. That requirement is non negotiable.

Gee, Selwyn. Are there any perfect candidates? No? Then let's destroy the ones we have!

It's easy to attack people from a blog. If no one meets your standard of perfection, then you had better run yourself. No? Then you are a coward.

I keep talking about her?

My post: Is that why they keep talking about her?

Are you "they"? Your ego is showing.

Your post was a nice try at a great redirect . You didn't answer.

You said: She took the unfair all-sided character assault of the liberals, the media, and the GOPe and did not survive.

I said: Is that why they keep talking about her? Because she doesn't matter?

Care to respond? Oh wait, no, you don't.

Bingo! Selwyn Duke has nothing more recent that 2008? I’m not going to read the rest.

” Oct. 2008 she was acting as a loyal member of Team McCain, and had to be extremely careful not to say things that would undercut the position of her would-be boss.”

VERY solid point AND the writer forgets the deluge that Gov. Palin underwent as she declared that Russia could and would invade to further Putin’s agenda.

While I agree we have better candidates, Obama, Biden, Clinton and the rest are triple as visious about their opponents. Palin’s style overall is fine. He red meat has gotten ‘redder’ was she’s further out of office, which is fine, but she’s not in a good position to run this time. She needs to find an official role somewhere to recover from the current direction she’s in. Senator, governor, party official...something. 2012 would have been her chance to change the trajectory and take on Romney. She’s got the political chops to do that. In a race with two term governors and good conservative options, this is not the race for her.

My view is that Palin should launch on a third party.

Here’s why;

With Hilary running as the first female candidate, she is going to get a huge portion of the women’s vote. That will be her biggest asset. She really has no other...

Keep in mind, most voters are not republicans or democrats. They are independents.

If Palin siphoned off the “because she’s a woman” vote, Clinton could not win. Nobody is going to vote for Clinton based on her record.

Palin might well win if she got a the biggest share of the conservative vote, or it would go to the republican. Palin would then need to run against both parties.

None of this matters. She isn’t running. She has no intention of running. She never has. She never will.

She can fire up the troops right where she is and make a boatload of money doing it.

Sarah is in it for Sarah.

And what kind of a job have the other "candidates" in elected office been doing for the past six years?

Palin has always been unreliable on the amnesty issue, sadly.

RE: Palin has always been unreliable on the amnesty issue, sadly.

I’m not sure if ANY Presidential candidate, Democrat or Republican satisifes a lot of FReepers on the immigration issue.

The path to citizenship already exists: Honorable [front-line, in the mud, combat arms] Military Service in the Armed Forces.

If one enters our country illegally for the purpose of taking jobs to which he has no right, and then wants to cut in line in front of those who came to us through legal avenues, then let the law-breaking SOB BLEED for us to prove his allegiance and willingness to assimilate.

I respectfully disagree. Any woman who has been a Hillary supporter is never EVER going to vote for a conservative like Sarah. If they have given up on Hillary for whatever reason, they are just going to vote for another liberal.

Launching verbal grenades is not a bad tactic at all, if the detonation of said grenades is in the right places.

A LOT of shibboleths (defined as: an old idea, opinion, or saying that is commonly believed and repeated but that may be seen as old-fashioned or untrue) need to be demolished, and what Sarah has been doing is targeting these old myths.

And fittingly, she draws a lot of fire from those who are deeply invested in these trite old beliefs, and while most of them just fume, sometimes, a spark is set off, and there is an epiphany, a new convert to the cause is born.

We are living to see these sparks occur repeatedly and ever more often.
