Cuban President Raul Castro demanded on Wednesday that the United States return the U.S. base at Guantanamo Bay, lift the half-century trade embargo on Cuba and compensate his country for damages before the two nations re-establish normal relations.
Castro told a summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States that Cuba and the U.S. are working toward full diplomatic relations but 'if these problems aren't resolved, this diplomatic rapprochement wouldn't make any sense.'
....The U.S. established the military base in 1903, and the current Cuban government has been demanding the land's return since the 1959 revolution that brought it to power. Cuba also wants the U.S. to pay hundreds of millions of dollars in damages for losses caused by the embargo.
'The re-establishment of diplomatic relations is the start of a process of normalizing bilateral relations, but this will not be possible while the blockade still exists, while they don't give back the territory illegally occupied by the Guantanamo naval base,' Castro said.
He demanded that the U.S. end the transmission of anti-Castro radio and television broadcasts and deliver 'just compensation to our people for the human and economic damage that they're suffered.'
The U.S. State Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Castro's remarks.
Castro's call for an end to the U.S. embargo drew support at the summit from the presidents of Brazil, Ecuador, El Salvador, Nicaragua and Venezuela.....

Compensate his country for “damages?” Someone needs to remind that communist POS of 56 years worth of rent checks from the US government the Castro government — out of “principle”— never cashed.
Good for Raul! He recognizes the limp wrist, weak knees, and spineless nature of the current regime.
The USA needs to extend the negotiations a little over two years when our country again has adult supervision (hopefully).
Obama will wind up giving them Miami.
Was the Panama Canal Carter’s to give back?
Predicted Obama would give Gitmo away months ago.....he is a VILE and EVIL man.
BLUNDER???? You don’t REALLY think this is a Blunder by him, do you? This is part of the GRAND PLAN Obama and the Dems have to Weaken the US and eventually DESTROY it, and he’s getting it done at Warp Speed......and NO ONE is stopping him.
Damages from an embargo on a communist dictatorship? Lol. Lol. Lol.
There were numerous people including yourself who have been saying all along this was the motive of Obama when he began to release all the high level terrorist.
Nope. But he eventually had to get 2/3rds of the U.S. Senate to ratify the treaty.
Well I’m pretty sure the current occupant won’t bother with such a trivial matter!
Alternatively, citing the Crimea as rationale, the facility at Guantanamo should be enlarged by annexing the balance of Cuba won from Spain in the Spanish american war. All of Cuba is historically American
Here we go! This will be Obama's ultimate goal; give back the naval base, so the Cubans can hand it over to the Chinese and/or Russians. Jimmy Carter handed over the Panama Canal, which is now controlled by the Red Chinese. Obama, who despisesthe USA, has consistently been on the side of anti American interests. What better way to put the icing on the cake of his eight years of making us a third rate banana republic?
Who do you think had the idea of Cuba getting Gitmo...
Who didn’t see this coming ?
Originating from a wink and a nod to Castro from Dear Leader; Who hates Gitmo almost as much as he despises the Constitution, Independence Hall, the Bill of Rights and the Liberty Bell.
Pretty much nails it.
The Mexicans had their chance. Alfred Zimmermann offered them Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona if they would side with Germany in WWI. They didn’t take him up on the offer. (Of course it would have required Germany to defeat the US for the promise to be carried out...and we didn’t have a Jimmy Carter or Barack Obama as President of the US at that time.)
One of the big mistakes in US foreign policy--going to war with Spain to liberate Cuba. The Cubans would be better off today if they still belonged to Spain.
