You Betcha I Was Wrong About Sarah Palin
Daily Beast ^ | 01/28/2015 | Matt Lewis

It’s time to admit that, whatever their motivation was at the time, the Alaska governor’s critics always had a point. Has conservative genuflection at the altar of Sarah Palin finally come to a halt?

In case you missed it, her speech in Iowa this week was not well received on the right. The Washington Examiner’s Byron York called it a “long, rambling, and at times barely coherent speech” and National Review’s Charles C.W. Cooke said she slipped into self-parody. And there’s more. The Examiner’s Eddie Scarry, for example, contacted several conservative bloggers who were once Palin fans, but have since moved on.

But here’s my question… what changed?

Yes, in 2008, Sarah Palin delivered one of the finest convention speeches I’ve ever heard (trust me, I was there), but she hasn’t exactly been channeling Winston Churchill ever since. Remember her big speech at CPAC a couple of years ago? You know, the one where she took a swig out of a Big Gulp and said of her husband Todd: “He’s got the rifle, I got the rack.” Not exactly a great moment in political rhetoric.

So why is anyone surprised when, this weekend, she said: “‘The Man,’ can only ride ya when your back is bent?”

Demosthenes, she is not, but there’s nothing new about Palin’s penchant for populism or lowbrow rhetoric. What does feel new is that she has finally gotten around to roundly losing conservative opinion leaders. (OK, this has been a long time coming. In 2011, Conor Friedersdorf noted that the hard right was skewering Palin, and that Kathleen Parker had been vindicated. And as recently as this past April, I wondered whether it was finally safe for conservatives to criticize her publicly.

“So what is wrong with Sarah, still a young woman trying again? Other candidates have made some early attempts at running and then decided not to pursue the nomination, but since they did not rent a bus, is it the fact that she rented a bus and then dropped out is what you are upset about? Was it your bus, and you were counting on the rental income? “

I’ve got nothing against her running again, but I am probably not going to back her if she does. She had the chance to run with my support, but she squandered it and I have moved on.

Why are you upset about that? Were you counting on my political contributions or something? Or is that just a silly question, hmm?

Sorry, I should have been more specific and said, "For someone to whine and cry," etc. Not necessarily you (my mistake), but a person who volunteered to get all caught up in the possibility that Palin would run and then blame her for their volunteering to do so -- is whining about being disappointed. That person should own his actions and stop blaming Palin for them.

I couldn’t fathom why she decided to rent a big bus and tour the primary states with her family, if she wasn’t planning on running. Doesn’t make much sense.

You are correct, it makes no sense.

Do you think the idea that she transformed from capable governor who helped to get old boy crony crooks tossed in jail, among other things, to a ditzy airhead who who all the sudden decides to drag her family to hell and gone just to jump up and down and look important? Did you read even one of her books? Have you read or listened to her words, the actual things she's promoting? You really think she's a psychopath who only pretends to believe it but really only wants to make fools out of people?

If that make sense to YOU, I'd like to know why.

what “stunt” have you ever pulled that did a damned thing to advance the cause. I am sick and tired of faux conservatives who think running for office is the only way someone should impact events. Thats NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT NOT conservative at all.

Well stated.

“You really think she’s a psychopath who only pretends to believe it but really only wants to make fools out of people?”

What the heck is wrong with you?

I can’t express a simple opinion about someone without having to think they are a “psychopath”?

I still regularly send Sarah Louise gas money for her bus/plane/Harley whatever she’d riding. It’s worth the price of admission to see the panic she stirs up in the heads of dimz. She’s doing a huge bunch of work that the RNC ought to be doing. I believe she’s gotten past her fear/apprehension of being attacked by morons and is now in “give ‘em hell” mode. And we share an alma mater which is a fine school and that might give me a better feel for her background than most. And she’s a better shot than anyone else on the stage and that’s worth something-—not being pansish about high powered machines etc. Notice that she still looks sharp in a hard hat.

Yeah, except you said “you” multiple times and the comment was quite clearly directed at me, so I’m not buying this non-apology. Whatever.

If you think you are being a good ambassador for Palin, I think you’re mistaken. If she read this thread I think she’d be ashamed of some of the comments made by her “supporters” and probably would like to disown them.

“or in this case, non-candidates”

That’s the real idiotic thing about all this. She isn’t running. She may not ever decide to run again.

Yet, if you say that you have moved on and are backing other candidates that are actually running, you get piled on.

What are we supposed to do? Sit around staring at a picture of Sarah in a heart-shaped frame, thinking “someday, my princess will come”? Or get on with the business of getting a conservative elected?

Even with all of the criticisms and complaints about Sarah, she is still the best candidate with which I relate. One doesn’t have to be ultra intelligent, just honest and have the best interests of the US in mind.

Does Sarah really need to announce she’s running? Depending on who’s leading, she still could be a dark horse candidate for VP. She’s got undeniable name recognition.

“Besides, suppose she got elected.”

She will be. I am more convinced than ever that she is destined to be our next president. Sarah Palin will lead us to reclaim America for CHRIST and defeat our enemies.

"Here should I run or not dance is simply self promoting her television show. New one coming soon. She has jumped the shark and needs to move on."

Maybe Sarah has to raise some money to run for President. And the TV shows promote her as did Death Valley Days promote Ronald Reagan.

Well said. We need to be putting oars in the water now. For starters, letters to your local papers should be ongoing. We need to educate the clueless about the issues of the current day. And don’t think that our representatives are not reading those letters too. In fact, you can send them a copy of the letter and tell them what day it was published. They then realize your perspective has made an impact. Our local paper reaches about 600,000 each day.

I feel fortunate that every letter I have sent in has been published. We can do it!

That list of Governor Sarah Palin’s accomplishments took 11 pages to put in a Word document in font 11. For anyone to ask, “What has Sarah Palin accomplished?” I would like to force feed those 11 pages, in hopes the impact gets absorbed into their deficient brain cells.

As long-time FReepers may recall, Matt Lewis taught a seminar on conservative activism at the FR Network conventions in Las Vegas a few years back.

Key FR contributors have been banned for offering milder criticism of Sarah Palin than Matt just did....
