ALBANY Embattled Speaker Sheldon Silver will be gone by Monday and Assembly Democrats are strongly united that Gov. Cuomo and Mayor de Blasio should keep out of picking his successor.
On Monday, there will be a vacancy in the office of speaker, Majority Leader Joseph Morelle (D-Rochester) said Tuesday.
He said he didnt know if Silver would resign or the chamber would have to take a vote to oust him.
Morelle will temporarily run the chamber until a permanent speaker has been chosen. A vote has been scheduled for Feb. 10.
Assemblyman Joseph Lentol told the Daily News on Tuesday that he drew loud applause from his Democratic colleagues when he said the choice of a new speaker is theirs alone.

“The next one will be just as corrupt as the last one - they are DemocRats, after all (not that the GOP is much better in NY, mind you).”
well, in Massachusetts, we had the last three speakers in a row indicted. and the fourth one is still in office, so give him time.
Someone is using this to keep Cuomo out of the 2016 presidential race.
This begs the question why did the democrats get a vote in the House speaker election, but want no R input in this one? Gee, a dem0crat double standard! Whoda thunk it possible?
What difference, at this point, does it make?
delenda est Albany.
Cuomo,the punk,doesn’t need any help.
He ain’t goin’ anywhere.
He will step down as Speaker, but remain as an Assemblyman.
In short order, he will take back the speakership and punish the defiant peons who opposed him.
He’s got the money, the political backers, and he’s got the dirt on them all.
These positions are for a lifetime.
Only get taken out feet first.
The corruption throughout New York and the huge dollars at stake make little Illinois and Old Mississippi political intrigues look like Student Council meetings.
The definition of an honest Democrat is on that stays bought!
