KANSAS CITY, Mo., Jan 26, 2015 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Today, at a kickoff event at its headquarters, Kansas City Power & Light Company (KCP&L), a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy Incorporated GXP, +0.37% announced its plans to install and operate more than 1,000 electric vehicle charging stations, making it the largest electric vehicle charging station installation by an electric utility in the United States. KCP&L’s Clean Charge Network is the next step in the company’s leadership in environmental sustainability. Over the next several months, KCP&L will install more than 1,000 charging stations throughout the Greater Kansas City region. This network of stations will be capable of supporting more than 10,000 electric vehicles. Through partnerships with companies at host locations and with Nissan Motor Company, the Clean Charge Network will offer free charging on every station to all drivers for the first two years. The stations are manufactured by ChargePoint and will be part of the ChargePoint network of more than 20,000 charging spots in North America.

“The Kansas City region is quickly building a reputation as an innovative, sustainable place to live and work,” said Terry Bassham, President and CEO of Great Plains Energy and KCP&L. “We’re excited to continue being a leader in support of this growth by providing our customers and visitors to this region with an environmentally-friendly alternative to gasoline-powered vehicles. Thanks to our Clean Charge Network, everyone in our service territory will be able to charge up and hit the road.”

Mandate that all groceries, medical supplies and internet orders be delivered by electric vehicle and we will soon see how ‘sustainable’ this boondoggle is.

No, if you are an electric ratepayer you will pay for this nonsense: welfare for the well-off.

They did a study of who was using the “free” (taxpayer funded) charging stations in Ann Arbor.

Turned out is was all 6 figure earners who could afford to pay for their own charging. I high percentage of those were UofM professors.

There is a problem looming ... time. 15 fast chargers will be included ... not all will be fast chargers. How many can drop work and go out and move their car so someone else can get charged? Maybe there are only 1000 workers who can afford an electric car??

From the article;

...The first stations deployed on the network will include 15 fast charging stations provided by Nissan and KCP&L, which will charge any model of electric vehicle on the market.

On the fast charging stations, an electric vehicle like the Nissan LEAF will charge from empty to approximately 80 percent in about 30 minutes.

In addition, the Clean Charge Network will have more than 1,000 standard charging stations, which will give most electric vehicles a 25 mile charge for every hour it is plugged into the station.

Cold winters make for poor performance for any electric vehicle in Kansas City.

“How many can drop work and go out and move their car so someone else can get charged?”

At first, none of them. Then after a few charging hogs get their Leafs vandalized, more people will find time to move their cars.

People can get violent when they’re lined up for “free” stuff.

I guy I know at work bought one of the Smartcar all electric cars last year. When the weather turned very cold in NH a few weeks ago, he would drive to work and only have a 40 or 42 % charge left. He would park near the loading docs since that was the only outlet on the building available and he would be plugged in all day just to get enough juice to get home. Needless to say he was not too happy about it.

Well, it has been very cold again starting last week and I haven't seen his car around or plugged in by the loading docs. Wonder what happen to his new electric car?

And every summer day between 11:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M. there will be brownouts and charging stations will be closed. Crap for brains.

wow, Kansas City is not exactly well let me tell you exactly what I think. When I moved here as a kid, I couldn’t understand the people here with their southern accent. I grew up in Minnesota. I don’t think Kansas City is exactly cutting edge. It is clubby and you have to know somebody to get a job.

25 mile charge for every hour it is plugged into the station.

That's about 30 seconds on a gas pump.

This might work if the charge stations are less than 25 miles apart. If your commute is 100 miles, then you're looking at only about 5 hours or more commute. Good luck!

All the replies to me echo my thoughts exactly.

My B-I-L leased a LEAF and was able to use it to commute because he had a dedicated plug-in spot at work (a Nissan dealership).

He was originally excited but it wasn't long before other thoughts intruded. He dumped it at the first opportunity.

The only hybrid that makes sense, IMHO, is the Volt regardless of the other shortcomings of GM.

There is not another one with an 800+ mile range due to the recharge as you go.

All this electric only stuff is liberal fantasy that any adult can see through in seconds.
