Blizzard expected to bring New York to a standstill, subway to shutdown
Los Angeles Atimes ^ | Monday, January 26, 2015 | Tina Susman, and others

Snow and powerful winds swept into the Northeast on Monday as a storm predicted to grow into a major blizzard prompted mass transit shutdowns, highway closures, thousands of airline flight cancellations and a ban on driving in New York City and on major roads across the region.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the closure of New York City’s subway and bus system as of 11 p.m. Monday, the first such closure since Superstorm Sandy hit the region in the fall of 2012.

With the closure of all mass transit, and the citywide driving ban as of 11 p.m., Cuomo’s declaration meant the nation’s largest city would be brought to a complete standstill except for people willing to venture out into the blowing snow.

Cuomo’s announcement came amid concerns that winds associated with the storm would gust as high as 70 mph.

Sometimes the string of bad weather can last sixty or seventy years.

I thought the communists usually counted that in deaths not years.

If you're so moved, please say a little prayer for my step-daughter. She's a Florida born and raised girl who is visiting NYC for the first time with her boyfriend right now. They were set to fly out today and even changed their flight to an earlier one. They were shuffled from LaGuardia to JFK where their flight was eventually cancelled.

I got up around 3:00 this morning searching for information because I couldn't sleep; worrying about her being able to get a hotel room if their flight was cancelled, worrying about their ability to eat if restaurants are closed, etc. Just because I didn't give birth to her myself doesn't mean this worry-wart Mom doesn't go through the motions with the step kids, LOL. I really feel quite helpless right now!

Storms like this aren’t the insurmountable problem. This one’s been predicted, with plenty of warning. The problem is when there’s a monster storm that no one anticipated.

New York City’s Past ‘Snowmageddons’
http://www.newsweek.com/new-york-citys-past-snowmageddons-302061

A 36-inch snowfall would set a record in a city that has experienced only two snowfalls greater than 2 feet in recent years

Why is the POS governor closing the NYC subways? Shouldn’t the POS mayor be making that call? Shorts weather in Denver for the next few days. maybe, if it lingers, NYC will go all Donner party. sounds like a plot for a movie and NYC residents have no firearms to defend themselves.
Seriously all those high-rise folks batter have -30 sleeping bags because they aren’t going to be running generators on their balconies. Maybe the higher end apartment buildings have big generators.

My Dad used to joke about the time we had 30 inches of snow flurries.

Weather prediction, for all the computer models and what not, is still basically a guess.

The thing is ... in the past, people didn’t even know it was coming in the first place. Things are a whole lot better these days with current-day predictions, as it allows people to have those important hours to get prepared. I would call that quite a benefit!
