Calling it a blizzard makes it more newsworthy. Just plain "snow storm" sounds boring.

Hey, they had to find a way to get deflated footballs off the front pages.

A “blizzard” is a snow storm with wind. We used to have them all the time without wetting our panties and fainting dead away.
