My wife and I went to see the matinee this morning. The 10:30 showing was very well attended for a Sunday morning. My wife said the movie made her cry. The theater was very quiet as people filed out.

The movie, though, made me think of Kipling's "Arithmetic on the Frontier". In it, a hundred years ago, commenting upon the British attempt to control Afghanistan, he noted that the Muslims could replace one of their fighters for a tiny fraction of what it cost the Brits to replace one of theirs. Something to think about.

Kipling's "Arithmetic on the Frontier".

When I was a student at the Armed Forces Staff College back in the 1960s I used that poem to illustrate the problem we then faced in Vietnam. We face it again in Afghanistan.
