In the power industry, you always have Christmas and Fourth of July outages for maintenance. As a salaried engineer working for a supplier, I never got an extra dime. Always rankled me working side-by-side with the union plant crews who were hauling in double-time.

...also, unlike chefs, my company didn’t tell me that before I signed on. I learned about it my first Christmas after signing. And this was back in the day when EVERYTHING was closed for Christmas.
