If what’s in that article is all the evidence they have, I would characterize the theiry as speculative at best. So McCarthy campaigned for Ellmers in 2014? Big freaking deal. The only thing the author mentioned that makes me think that they may be having an affair is that “sources in Bakersfield, North Carolina and D.C. all believe that,” which, if true, means that it’s an actual rumor and not the author’s creation, but, of course, he provides no actual evidence of the affair or even of a rumor existing.
Oh, and the author’s “smoking gun” are the Tweets that prove that McCarthy and Ellmers campaigned together. But if that proves anything, it proves too much. Check out this Tweet that the author cited:
