Anything withheld by this government during this trial (& appeals) could and would have been withheld had each of these testifying subordinates been charged as well.
I am sure the members of the command were offered the carrot and the stick to testify against their platoon leader. Highly illegal but common as dirt in the UCMJ.
In the military if they want to get you, they will. Sure this gets overturned but this officer, his career as an officer is done.
