NFL finds Patriots used underinflated footballs

The Patriots used underinflated footballs on Sunday night.

The next question is how did it happen?

According to a National Football League letter about the investigation into the controversy that was shared with the Globe, the Patriots were informed that the league’s initial findings indicated that the game balls did not meet specifications. The league inspected each of the Patriots’ 12 game balls twice at halftime, using different pressure gauges, and found footballs that were not properly inflated.

According to ESPN, 11 of the 12 game balls were found to be underinflated by about 2 pounds each. The NFL specifications say they must be inflated to 12½ to 13½ pounds.

The investigation is still ongoing.

A league spokesman declined to comment Tuesday, and earlier in the day, NFL executive vice president Troy Vincent told Pro Football Talk that the investigation would ideally be complete within two or three days.

If the Patriots are found to have deliberately doctored footballs, the organization can be fined a minimum of $25,000, and if the NFL finds the incident egregious, the Patriots could potentially lose a draft pick. In 2007, commissioner Roger Goodell took away a first-round draft pick and fined Patriots coach Bill Belichick after determining the team had spied on an opponent.

Okay, so two different factories. If we wanted to buy an official NFL game ball where would you wind up getting it from? And can you even buy an official ball?

You would think that when the official who hands the ball to the offense just before the play would have noticed something if the football was missing a little air.

I'd be looking at the officials who did the pre-game inspection and signed off on it. If they did it properly and documented all the balls then that points squarely at the Patriots. If they didn't or can't show that the process was followed per the rules or their proscribed protocol, then the whole thing is a non-issue.

Yep.

I'm upper, upper class high society
God's gift to ballroom notoriety
And I always fill my ballroom
The event is never small
the social papers say I've got the biggest balls of all.

Most of the Patrtiot's haters here are Jets fans, though all the other NFL teams have 13 years of reasons to hate the winningest team in NFL history.

Let 'em suck on it while we call them a "Wahhhmbulance."

LOL!!! GO PATS!!!

Belicheck had nothing to do with the inflated level of the balls. Get real.

Belicheat probably plays Madden just so he can crank up the skill levels on his team (and lower the opponents) so he can win every time. He should probably just do that to satisfy his cheating jollies instead of screwing with the integrity of the actual game.

February 1st just got freed up for me.

He cannot participate in a big game, even where he is heavily favored, without bending the rules in some way. He should be removed from the NFL for a year, at least. (Preferably forced to coach the Browns again, LOL)

Drank the Kool Aid long ago, eh?

A control freak like Belichick... with a notorious temper... you really think ANYONE in that organization would do a single thing that could impact the game without his approval?? You're clearly being willfully ignorant.

Probably should check it out for yourself. You’re telling me that BB didn’t know? Brady was on the radio several years ago saying he liked soft footballs.

But, it seems to me, that if this such a big deal, maybe the NFL could spring a few bucks for balls and have an NFL employee or ref do the inflating.

Bingo.

“America could manufacture footballs for under $20 but choose not to do it since they can hedge prices a little more by outsourcing.”

I seriously doubt that “America” could manufacture, market, distribute, and sell an NFL-quality football at a retail price of less than $20 and make a reasonable profit. The NFL logo and the commissioner's signature on the Wilson NFL ball surely adds builds a premium into the current price, ... but $70?

Bellichick’s motto: “Win if you can, lose if you must but always cheat whenever possible.”

Come on,this is BeliCHEAT in action. The whole team knew the footballs would be deflated and practiced with them. Heck, they’ve probably been using this trick for all home games for 5 or more years. When the NFL found out about their taping of hand signals, they punished them for doing it for SIX YEARS.

On reconsideration, they’ve probably used this cheat at away games too, not just home games.

Once someone starts to cheat and is caught(in this case repeatedly),who knows how much else they are doing? Consider what baseball has done...how about an ASTRERISKor two next to their 3 (or 4) SuperBowl titles.

Yeah, the Colts weren’t close but the Ravens lost a very close game the week before.

The Patriots are like the Tea Party....always criticized for nothing.

That is insult to the Tea Party. Bill Bellichick is more comparable to Obama and his tactics analogous to the corruption of the IRS.
