I know there is a Mt Haruna because of the battleship named for it. It’s the one American news accounts sank three or four times.

Funny you should mention that. I have an odd fascination with the oft-"sunk" Haruna, which is why I looked into the name itself and learned that the ship was named after the mountain, and that the name has since become a popular female name in Japan. It's the name that's what caught my notice about the ISIS hostage.

Well, isn’t that interesting. Of course, the traitor Bergdahl was also probably a Muslim convert, like his daddy (judging by the beard and the clothing), and we lost several good men and Obama probably paid lots of money to get him back. And now he’s not even going to be charged even though the military obviously wants charges against him, which is why the report hasn’t been released.
So the Japanese aren’t the only ones with this problem.

I’m interested in the Pacific War. Had my dad’s Ike jacket with the 5th Air Force patch when I was in high school. Am reading Neptune’s Inferno right now about the Guadalcanal naval campaign. I used to work with two former Marines who were on Guadalcanal and one guy who was a sailor on the Dent. They had a some interesting stories.

I imagine that your Marine coworkers would be less than thrilled about the Haruna, as that's the ship that (along with the Kongo) shelled Henderson Field so effectively. It was one of the very few times during the entire war that any of the IJN battleships performed any sort of useful service for their country.
(Sorry for taking this thread off-track, everyone.)
