All balls are inspected by the refs. So that brings up the question of if they messed with the balls before the inspection and the refs just missed it, or after the inspection and the league really is dumb for letting team officials handle the balls after inspection.

The answer is that the league is really that dumb. Team officials get the balls 2 hours and 15 minutes before the game.

before the inspection and the refs just missed itAccording to Mike and Mike this morning, it is standard operating procedure for the refs is to use a pressure gauge to check all the footballs in the pregame inspection.
So it's unlikely the refs missed it beforehand.
