You understand wrong if you are comparing stock.

 

Today's 4 banger.... 310 hp and 320 lbs of torque

vs.

10 year old V8..... 300 hp and 320 lbs of torque.

 

Pretty sure I've read other reviews that made apples to apples comparisons of stock models. The four cylinder wins out.
