....researchers looked at the diets of children ages 2 to 11 and teens aged 12 to 19 from 2003-2010. They found that pizza makes up about 20% of kids’ daily calories on days when they eat pizza—and despite the insistence of some politicians that pizza should be considered a vegetable for its ample tomato sauce, those calories aren’t coming from an onslaught of veggies.....

What is TRULY scary is that our kids are being taught government is their daddy, perversion is normal, and that there are no absolute truths.

Pizza is the LEAST of their problems.

Well, of course. If you eat three meals, and one of them has pizza as the main course, and you are drinking a quart of sugary coca-cola with it, the pizza should be up to one-third of yur calories. Bread, cheese, tomato sauce, additional meat and veggies to taste, a little oil ... what's not to like?

I didn't see any call for govt. control. It was an informative article. I agree with it, btw. Pizza is eaten way too much by kids. Unless they are very active pizza will put on pounds quickly.

What is it with FReepers that can't see that the U.S. is becoming an obese nation? Not sure what to do about it but ignoring it is not a good idea either.

Amen. Obesity of the body is bad, but starvation of the soul is dangerous.

When I was in college, I ate pizza at least 4 times a week. I could get a large from Godfather’s for $4.99. It contained all the necessary food groups. Beer was $2.79 for a 12 pack.

Exactly - when I eat pizza, it makes up about 80% of my daily calories - I love pizza...

From what I see in my limited view of the world, pizza consumption today is much less than the 2003-2010 timeframe referenced here; along with fast food, it is now beyond the reach of too many parents financially. We used to order it every couple of weeks, and now order once every six months or so (for a birthday or something similar); when we occasionally stop by a pizzeria after a soccer practice or game, there are few customers and drivers sitting around with no deliveries. The empty boxes that had been commonplace in front of homes for newspaper/cardboard recycling are truly a thing of the past.

We are becoming an obese nation, as time and money make it difficult to prepare healthy meals; ignorant parents too often believe the breaded fast-food type frozen chicken nuggets are the same as cooking a chicken from scratch and serving it. Couple poor food choices with inactive people and you have the makings of a disaster.

Liz . . . Liz . . . if your pizza is deserving of the name, PLEASE do both it and the arugula salad a favor and put the arugula salad on the side.

We had access to all the worst crap when I was a kid. They sold candy and soda beside the normal hot lunch in the cafeteria in school. I usually brought a bag lunch. We would walk down the avenue and buy candy in the candy store and pizza in a REAL pizzeria (Bronx NY)by the slice. None of the kids I remember being obese. A couple chubby but none real obese.

In the old days, it was real tomato sauce and onions and a sprinkling of Romano...not plastered with Mozzarella.

In the late 50's, Woolworth's had a really really thin crust. It was a huge slice for 10 cents. That was our after school snack.

Do you have a Big Y store near you? An 18” x 24” party pizza is about $20. It’s humongous. Cheap and easy and full of calories.

Well hopefully today I’ll se my granddaughter today after quite a while. When I ask her ok what’s your favorite lunch and she says pizza. Guess what? We are having pizza.
When I was a kid, we never heard about you must eat this and that. Sure in grade school they came out with that magical food triangle. But in my day what mom served we ate. As a matter of fact when I was a kid in my mostly poor Irish neighborhood for lunch we had PB and J every single day. Now a days God forbid a kid bring PB&J to school. I mean come on there might 1 kid in the entire cafeteria with a peanut allergy.
In my day hopefully you could scrape a Quarter together because the Catholic cafeteria only served pizza on Fridays and it was cheese only because we weren’t allowed to eat meat on Fridays. Especially during Lent, I mean that was a big time sin back in the day
