Taxes on a pack of cigarettes would nearly triple from 79 cents a pack to $2.29 per pack. And taxes on liquor would rise to 12 percent from 8 percent.
He is just getting ahead of the pack, Rino’s in congress will soon go on a tax spree all the while putting on smoke and mirror dog and pony shows to the contrary, we will most likely see taxes on internet and fuel first laying the foundation; a paved road to unlimited taxation.
Only poor people, with not enough money for food, smoke.
Not to mention a rise on the gasoline tax.
Talk about keeping a boot on the neck of the economy. Do you see what is going on here people? We are being slowly turned into Tax Slaves.
Brownback is trying to shift the tax burden from direct (income) to indirect taxes (sales, etc.). The leftists and moderates hate this, for progressive income taxes have been part of their game plan for over a hundred years, and they like to get their money at the source, rather than waiting for someone to buy something.
To his credit, Brownback (like Reagan) isn’t budging on the income taxes (they’re just being slowed), but unfortunately, circumstances are causing him to budge on other taxes/fees to balance the budget.
This shift will show dividends later.
The Republican left is all about big government and control. People might as well vote for Democrats.
Smokers are an easy target; they don’t stand up for themselves because they keep thinking that they want to quit anyway, but many never do.
For the amount of taxes they pay they should be celebrated rather than shunned.
What’s the tax on liquor, etc., in neighboring states? Missouri, for example?
The taxes they pay barely keep up with the cost of cleaning up after them.
What is it about smokers that they feel they have a God-given right to throw their butts wherever they want, for other people to clean up?

I don’t know but that’s one of the benefits of indirect taxes. The people can get around them. They can’t get around income taxes and withholding, which is why the government loves them so much. They get their cut of somebody’s labor first.
Missouri has about the lowest taxes on alcohol in the country - 6 cents per gallon on beer, and $2 per gallon on wine and liquor.
Anti-smoking Nazis like you forced them outside. When they were allowed to smoke inside they had ashtrays.
I assume you live in Kansas? Have you read the recent story about the big budget deficit? Of course, KS Democrats are blaming the governor’s tax cuts. What’s the story?
