How Evangelicals Are Changing Their Minds on Gay Marriage
Time ^ | January 15, 2015 | Elizabeth Dias

Posted on 01/17/2015 6:03:25 AM PST by C19fan

If evangelical Christianity is famous for anything in contemporary American politics, it is for its complete opposition to gay marriage. Now, slowly yet undeniably, evangelicals are changing their minds.

Every day, evangelical communities across the country are arriving at new crossroads over marriage. My magazine story for TIME this week, “A Change of Heart,” is a deep dive into the changing allegiances and divides in evangelical churches and communities over homosexuality. In public, so many churches and pastors are afraid to talk about the generational and societal shifts happening. But behind the scenes, it’s a whole different game. Support for gay marriage across all age groups of white evangelicals has increased by double digits over the past decade, according to the Public Religion Research Institute, and the fastest change can be found among younger evangelicals—their support for gay marriage jumped from 20% in 2003 to 42% in 2014.

I had a subscription, but when it expired, my finances weren’t such as to allow me to renew at the time. Now that you’ve reminded me, I’m going to renew. Thanks for the reminder :)

I did it centuries ago for $100 but I don't think it's much more these days ... (may be 2 or less ?)

Well worth the investment

I've gone through three (I think) editors ... Rice, Hutson and now Smith

The state should be removed from marriage.

The state isn't involved in your marriage, unless you were one of those who wanted a state approved marriage.

Were you?

Because you can ignore getting government approval if you choose, you could 100 years ago, and 200 years ago, but George Washington and Thomas Jefferson wanted state approval, Washington even had to submit to investigation and Jefferson wanted to have a marriage license, but you don't have to.

Marriage is a political battle, your posts are a way of supporting the left by trying to dishonestly convince conservatives to surrender and leave the left unopposed, in making the marriage laws of America.

Why surprise. Many of these Evangelical and Protestant denominations now allow for “ordained” gay and lesbian ministers.

Bozell & Graham Column: The Golden Globes of Propaganda
By Brent Bozell and Tim Graham | January 17, 2015 | 8:02 AM EST

When the Golden Globe awards telecast was over, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) proclaimed, “It was a great night for LGBT-inclusive television.” They could have added: “We run the joint.”

Gay actor Matt Bomer thanked his “husband” and his surrogate sons when he won an award for HBO’s Reagan-bashing AIDS drama “The Normal Heart.”

But the bigger celebration came with a best actor award to Jeffrey Tambor, who plays Mort, a 70-year-old father of three who decides he’s a woman named Maura in a show called “Transparent,” or literally, “Trans Parent,” since his three adult children have to figure this whole scene out. The show “airs” on Amazon.com.

The announcer on NBC said not only was this Tambor’s first Golden Globe, but his first nomination, which came as a surprise, since he acted in critical favorites like “The Larry Sanders Show” and “Arrested Development.” Apparently, you go “full transgender” to get noticed.

Tambor hit his political mark exactly as he accepted the trophy. “This is big. This is much bigger than me.” He thanked his three transgender-activist advisers, and concluded “I would like to dedicate my performance and this award to the transgender community. Thank you for your courage. Thank you for your inspiration. Thank you for your patience. And thank you for letting us be a part of the change.”

In the strange bifurcation of Golden Globes judging, “Transparent” was a “musical or comedy,” even though this show is deadly serious about its politics. Series creator Jill Soloway appears in supportive articles with headlines like “Jill Soloway Is Ready To Topple The Patriarchy.”

Were you?

FWIW I was married by a MINISTER, an ordained Presbyterian.

Regardless of where or when one gets married, the issue I was addressing is the marriage LICENSE, not states conducting marriage ceremonies. When the state puts its imprimatur on a fag marriage license, it is approving the behavior. If the state were not issuing licenses in the first place, there would be no such acquiescence this is a normal event.

So, remove all auspices of state sanctions of marriage. Leave it up to the churchs. Whether one’s church marries or does not marry someone should be left up to the church's teaching IMO.

If anyone believes the court is going to overturn fag marriage, you are wrong. The courts have foisted this event upon the states which have voted to not sanction them. Our nation has been substantially transformed just like the jackass in the whitehut wanted.

According to Barna Research:

Back in 1962, two thirds of Americans believed in absolute Truth. In 1992, 25% believed in absolute truth. I hate to know what it is now.

Today, it is hateful to speak the truth about immorality or even educate what the right path to heaven is.

When you decline to believe in absolute truth, you will believe in anything.

One doesn’t have to get a license or have the state recognize their marriage as legal, Thomas Jefferson and Washingto chose to have legal marriages, but just like you could have, they could ignore the state, many Americans do.

If you don’t want a marriage license, then don’t get one, in the meanwhile conservatives need to fight gay marriage, they cannot just drop out and let the left control marriage law unopposed.

The Mosque, the Mormons, the gay churches, the regular churches, atheists, shack up marriage, they can all make their own private marriage rules and always could, they don’t have to pursue “legal” marriage if they don’t want to.

that’s supposed to be one of the hallmarks of Chrstianity, opposition to the world.

Among Traditional Catholics as well. Many do not have a television, for example, or view most contemporary films. We have a tv but it is used only to watch news or nature shows, etc., never "popular" entertainment. Music and music videos the kids can watch are severely restricted as well. I had to take the eighth grade girl out of middle school dance because of a lewd move that was being introduced.

“One doesn’t have to get a license or have the state recognize their marriage as legal”

NJ for one has a 500 criminal fine for officiating at an unlicensed marriage event. I am sure there are others but I am not going to research that issue. I am not talking about a common law situation BTW.

IMO, the whole notion of a government sanction of marriage is predicated upon marriage status becoming a determining factor in the distribution of benefits, inheritance, and health care. BTW, here in Florida, a simple license to do so costs about $90 which is a nice pile of money for the state. I don’t want the state in my personal life to this extent and surely I don’t want them profiting from it.

If you don’t want a state legal marriage, then don’t ask for one, why is that so difficult for you?

Why are you trying to get conservatives to drop resistance to marriage law and let the left make all the marriage laws?

2 Like the Episcopal church, the wider they spread their arms, the more people come in the door (and tithe).

Matthew 7:13 (NIV) 13 Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

FReepers, the toothpaste is out of the tube. PLEASE don’t focus on this issue for 2016. The number of people up in arms over gay marriage has shrunk to a very unhelpful number. Within your houses of worship do as you will, but we need to walk around this puddle and focus on the larger issues.

While I do argee that gay marriage is a done deal this summer, conservatives need to be willing to stand up for religious liberty. The HHS mandate on religious institutions is just the beginning. The gay gestapo will be looking for ways to use the government to force churches & other religious institutions to approve of homosexuality.

It is not possible for an “evangelical” to accept or promote gay marriage.

Evangelical means literally “to evangelize” or “to proclaim the good news/gospel.”

The gospel is simply: Christ died for our sins.

Those who ‘repent and believe the gospel’ are saved.

Among those things for which one must repent and which will never be acceptable behavior for Christians is: sexual immorality of all types....to include homosexuality as Paul so clearly points out in Romans 1.
