DLG did not stand for guide missile frigate. DLG stood for Destroyer Leader Guided Missile. These ships were intended to be the Squad Dog’s flag ship with AA missile capability.

Despite the "DL" in their hull numbers, the DLG's were called frigates, not destroyer leaders:

The only “double-ended” DLG class—fitted with missile launchers fore-and-aft—was the Leahy class, the first and only frigate class designed without a main gun battery...
