On Thursday, the Mexican government began issuing birth certificates to its citizens at its 50 U.S.-based consulates, a move that will make it easier for illegal immigrants to obtain drivers licenses and work permits and to stay in the U.S. under President Obamas executive amnesty decision.
In the past, Mexican citizens had to obtain their birth certificates from offices in Mexico. Individuals would often have relatives and friends obtain the documents and send them into the U.S.
But with the Mexican governments help, its U.S.-based citizens will receive documents more quickly, which will help them apply for amnesty under Obamas plan, which is expected to provide relief from deportation to approximately five million illegal immigrants.
According to the Associated Press, roughly half of the 11 million illegal immigrants residing in the U.S. are from Mexico. Of those, up to three million could be eligible for relief under Obamas amnesty effort.
It is a huge help. It helps individuals really begin to formulate their formal identity in this country, said Angelica Salas, the executive director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles told The Associated Press.

American children born in, say, Greece for example, can have birth certificates issued at the American embassy or a consulate. It has nothing to do with bogus papers.
An illegal alien getting a birth certificate in the USA.
Nothing good can come of this.
What, pray tell, do you care if any kind of an alien gets a birth cert from his or her native consulate here?
This sort of nonsense makes conservatives look ridiculous.
There must be something more important in our immigration law fro Mexican citizens than other immigrants, because they are selling Mexican birth certificates in USA to illegals...something we don’t know yet?
“What, pray tell, do you care if any kind of an alien gets a birth cert from his or her native consulate here?”
I didn’t say alien. I said illegal alien. And I do care because they do belong here in the first place and this will be just another way to let them stay.
I am guessing you are part of the Amnesty crowd?
“And I do care because they do belong here in the first place and this will be just another way to let them stay.”
And having a Mexican, not American, birth certificate is a way “to let them stay” just how? This sort of argument hurts your cause.
“And I do care because they do belong here in the first place and this will be just another way to let them stay.”
Ooops, my bad. That should say they do *not* belong here in the first place.
